The objective of the degree programme in textile and material engineering is to educate internationally and technically oriented textile and material engineers to work in global textile and fashion, and material industry, to be able to work in different positions in the field and to respond the needs of future working life. The education is technical, international, multidisciplinary and educates engineers to create new textile innovations and to solve the global sustainability and environmental challenges related to textile and material industry.
In the bachelor’s degree in Textile and Material engineering you will come to understand the fundamentals of textile materials and processes, the integral development of different textile products and industrial manufacturing, textile structures and non-woven fabrics, mechanical and chemical processing and finishing operations of textiles. A graduate from textile and material engineering degree programme has the latest know-how of sustainable engineering know-how in the field of textile and material processing and manufacturing, deep understanding of textile quality and product safety issues.
An innovative and forward-looking mindset plays a vital role. Studying in an international community and atmosphere will give you unique possibilities to develop your communication and team working skills. During your studies you will have a great chance to grow your network.
STRUCTURE OF STUDIES
The Degree Programme consists of the following parts:
• Basic and Professional Studies (165 ECTS credit points)
• Elective Professional studies (15 ECTS credit points)
• Free-Choice Studies (15 ECTS credit points),
• Practical Training (30 ECTS credit points)
• Bachelor’s Thesis (15 ECTS credit points)
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates from the degree programme in textile and material engineering face exciting global professional opportunities in the fields of e.g., manufacturing and production, marketing, sales, product management and development or you can also work globally among supply chain management or project management. When you complete your studies, you will be capable of understanding the technical requirements for processing the textile products and materials, including technical and smart fabrics.
After graduating you have the latest knowledge of processes related to the textile industry and global business. Textile circularity and recyclability, new recycled textile fibres and materials play a key role in your education. You will get good basic knowledge and skills for innovating the circular economy challenges and work for this field of expertise. New textile and material engineer understand the requirements of sustainable circular economy thinking in product design and manufacturing, as well as the requirements for reuse and recyclability. You will learn basic business skills and acquire competence essential for success in today’s international working life.
IMPLEMENTATION OF TEACHING
The teaching utilizes learning-activating and diverse teaching methods, and the activities are carried out in various learning environments in close collaboration with other degree programmes. The study courses include project work, practical tasks, presentations and learning tasks which are often carried out in teams. Laboratory exercises and projects give the opportunity to apply theory in practice. Practical training (30 credits) is an essential part of the studies supporting the student’s development into a professional in the field. Students are encouraged to complete part of their training or studies abroad.
DESCRIPTION OF THE STUDIES
1st year
During the first year of studies the student develops a scientific basis and gets acquainted with the fields of textile and material engineering. The emphasis is on natural sciences and developing the basis for future studies. After the first study year the student has an overall picture of the textile and material engineering and the industry. The student has knowledge of the diverse uses of textile materials. The student knows how to work safely in laboratories. The students will learn working life skills, searching of professional and scientific information and writing technical reports.
2nd year
After the second year the student continue building the foundation for professional studies by studying natural sciences. After the foundation is built, the studies will focus more and more on professional topics about textile manufacturing processes. The students will also gain working life skills with different engineering and management practices.
3rd year
In the third study year deeper business and sustainability know-how is developed. The student study elective professional studies from other programme degrees, for example computer science and digitalization, environmental, or business studies. One or two semesters can be used for studies abroad.
4th year
The autumn semester is focused on practical training it the student has not done the internship during the semester breaks (summers). In the beginning of fourth year, the student finds a topic for a final thesis. Thesis work is made at the end of the studies to show the development of the student from the professional point of view.

The student will gain knowledge and skills to promote the circular economy, sustainability and traceability of the textile and fashion industry.
After completing the program, student will have a comprehensive view of materials, manufacturing technologies from fibres to final products, business and environmental issues in the textile and fashion industry.

The curriculum complies with the European and National Higher Education Qualification Frameworks (Bachelor of Engineering, EQF 6).
Our curriculum is continuously developed in close collaboration with the working life. The study content is continuously revised to stay up to date with the working life requirements and changes in the field. New learning methods, especially project studies, working life skills and up-to-date technology, are essential parts of the curriculum.
