Location and time

On the course we have meetings two or one times a week. The most of Meetings are 3 h and in classroom. Some meetings are 2h and these are for group working, listening comprehensions and etc.

Lessons start on week 6, on Thursday 12 th at 12.30.

Some changes to the schedules may occur because the teaching of another course still needs to be added to the teacher's calendar.

The evaluation will be mainly based on the final exam (written part + speaking part). In unclear cases, the mid exam and overall course participation can either increase or decrease the grade.

We practice speaking, listening comprehension, writing, and reading. We will focus on active language use and comprehension. Also some occupational language for presentation for the Course of Internal Medication and Palliative Nursing.

In this Finnish course we co-operate with course Nursing Care of Internal Medicine and Palliative Care. Students can use some time and get guidance for presentation in this occupational course.

Assessment methods and criteria

The student will be evaluated based on the following course work:
- the spoken exam (a simulated patient discussion, 40 % weight)
- the written exam ("listen and write" exam, 30 % weight)
- the average of language test scores and homework activity (30 % weight)

In addition to this, the student should be available and present at least 80 % of the classroom time and 100 % of the exam time.

You will have classroom meetings, homework exercises, language tests, and a final exam in the course. You will practice vocabularly, grammar, speaking, listening comprehension, reading, and writing.

The goal is to extend your knowledge in basic Finnish, and also provide a rudimentary basis for professional language use in the nursing field.

You face the risk of failing the course in the following situations:

- You do not reach the minimum success level (30 %) in the course work.
- You miss a few too many classroom meetings, and do not ask for compensatory work.
- You miss so many classroom meetings that your participation can not be accepted anymore.
- You try and attend classroom meetings but cause too much disturbance to be there.
- You miss one or both exams without notifying the teacher.

You will automatically fail the course if you have too many absences, and can not showcase at least grade 4 level of success in the exam. In other cases, the teacher will evaluated on an individual basis what will happen to the student's course participation.

In addition to this, the student should be available and present at least 80 % of the classroom time. If the student misses more than 80 % of the classroom time but is able to reach grade 4 level in the overall course evaluation, the attendance requirement will not be taken into account.

The mid exam
- The chat: You need to attend one 15 minute meeting in one of the available slots on Tuesday, April 19th or Wednesday, April 20th.

The final exam
- The written part: Monday 23th (from 10 AM to 12 PM, for everyone)
- The nursing simulation: Tuesday 24th (from 10 AM to 4 PM, around 20 min. per a group)

Assessment methods and criteria

The evaluation will be mainly based on the final exam (written part + nursing simulation). In unclear cases, the mid exam and overall course participation can either increase or decrease the grade.

Weight of the evaluation:
- The nursing simulation has 60 % weight on the evaluation.
- The written exam has 40 % weight on the evaluation.
- Other course work can have a positive, negative, or neutral affect on the evaluation.

For example:
The student receives the grade 3,5 in the exam. The student has done their course work very diligently, and showed active participation already before the exam. Student's course grade will be 4.

The student receives the grade 3,5 in the exam. It has been a bit difficult to co-operate with the student, and they also failed to sow their knowledge in the mid exam. Student's course grade will be 3.
