Objectives

Supervised clinical training gives you opportunities to apply the advanced theoretical knowledge you have learned in practical customer situations. You get to work as part of a multidisciplinary team while developing your own expertise.

After completing the course, the student
• will be able to use key symptom questionnaires and interviews in mental health and substance abuse nursing to help identify symptoms
• is able to plan and implement the treatment process together with the client and their families in a customer-oriented manner
• manages the implementation and monitoring of pharmacotherapy in the treatment of mental health and substance abuse disorders
• will be able to utilize multidisciplinary knowledge in professional decision-making and and bases its actions on evidence-based knowledge
• manages oral and written reporting
• identify and act to influence negative attitudes related to mental health and substance abuse disorders

Content

Orientation to clinical training and supervised clinical training in specialised services implementing mental health and/or substance abuse nursing.

Prerequisites

At the beginning of the Optional Professional Studies, the student must have completed 135 credits. These should include theoretical studies of the area which the student has chosen for the Optional Professional Studies, as well as courses in anatomy and physiology and minimum six supervised clinical training courses.
Participation in the course Competence in Mental Health and Substance Abuse Nursing in Specialised Services.

Assessment criteria, pass/fail

Pass: The student
• has demonstrated the ability to identify, select and use various evidence-based methods of mental health and substance abuse nursing according to the needs of the client and their families
• has worked in multidisciplinary cooperation as a nursing professional
• has used the interview and, if necessary, is able to use key symptom questionnaires to identify the client's symptoms
• has planned and implemented therapeutic interaction with the client and, where possible, cooperated with families
• has carried out pharmacotherapy safely, as far as possible, and has ensured that the medication passport is filled in where applicable
• has sought to reduce negative attitudes related to mental health and substance abuse disorders through its own actions
• has reflected on the ethical aspects of mental health and substance abuse treatment practices
• has identified personal development needs in different professional interaction situations and is able to use the supervision to support professional growth

Fail: The student
• does not recognize or is not able to select and use various evidence-based methods of mental health and substance abuse nursing according to the needs of the client and families
• has not demonstrated the ability to work in multidisciplinary cooperation as a nursing professional
• has not demonstrated the ability to use the interview or, where necessary, key symptom questionnaires to identify the client's symptoms
• does not know how to interact with the client in therapeutic relationships or take their families into account
• the student has not implemented medication even though the clinical training has had the opportunity to do so
• the student has not carried out medication safely
• the student has not used multidisciplinary knowledge in professional decision-making or has not based activities on evidence-based knowledge
• does not manage reporting in accordance the practices of clinical placement
• has not sought to reduce negative attitudes related to mental health and substance abuse disorders
• has not reflected on the ethical aspects of mental health and substance abuse treatment practices
• has compromised patient safety during training, for example by violating data protection
• has not followed the instructions of the clinical placement, e.g. compliance with working hours
• shortcomings in workforce planning and implementation
• does not recognize personal development needs in different professional interaction situations or does not know how to use supervision to support professional growth
