Objectives
The aim of the study course is to deepen basic knowledge about the nursing work of a child and family who is suddenly ill and requires intensive care.
After completing the course, the student
• Knows the principles of ethical behaviour in the care of acutely ill and critically ill children and families in their professional field.
• Can apply theoretical knowledge at different stages of the care process in the care of acutely ill children and families requiring intensive care as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Knowledge and skills in the theoretical and operational principles of drug and fluid management of acutely ill children and children in need of intensive care.
• Acts responsibly in the professional development of his/her own competence in the care of acutely ill and critically ill children.
Content
• Multidisciplinary care of children with sudden illnesses requiring intensive care and surgical treatment
• Multidisciplinary care of sick newborns and premature infants
• Multidisciplinary care of dying children and their families
• Support and guidance for the child and family in the event of a child's sudden illness
• Medication and fluid management of children and adolescents
Prerequisites
At the beginning of the Optional Professional Studies, the student must have completed 135 credits. These should include theoretical studies of the area which the student has chosen for the Optional Professional studies, as well as courses in anatomy and physiology and minimum six supervised clinical training courses.
In each of the Optional Professional Studies for Nursing for Children and Young People as well as Perioperative Nursing, a maximum of 70 students can be selected annually. The student selection is carried out according to 9§ of the Degree Regulations. Selection is based on the average grades of courses other than elective studies. The selection process takes place according to a separate schedule in spring and autumn when students apply for Optional Professional Studies, at which point the academic achievements of applicants are reviewed.

The student
• • Knows the basics of ethical activities related to their professional field in the care of a child and family who is suddenly ill and requires intensive care.
• Understands basic theoretical information and participates in the different stages of the treatment process in the care of a child and family who is suddenly ill and requires intensive care as part of a multiprofessional work group.
• Knows and is able to implement medication and fluid therapy safely and comprehensively for a child with long-term and neurological illnesses.
• Is responsible for the theoretical and operational development of his own competence in the nursing work of a child and family who is suddenly ill and requires intensive care.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4)
The student
• • Knows the basics of ethical activities related to their professional field in the care of a child and family who is suddenly ill and requires intensive care.
• Uses theoretical knowledge in the different phases of the treatment process in the care of a child and family who is suddenly ill and requires intensive care and works actively as part of a multi-professional work group.
• Knows and is able to implement medication and fluid therapy safely and comprehensively for a child with long-term and neurological illnesses.
• Is active in the development of his own theoretical knowledge and activities regarding the care of a child and family who is suddenly ill and requires intensive care.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student
• • Apply the principles of ethical behavior related to their professional field in caring for a child and family who is suddenly ill and requires intensive care.
• Uses theoretical knowledge in a structured manner in the different stages of the treatment process in the nursing work of a child and family who is suddenly ill and requires intensive care and works as a member of a multi-professional work group.
• Knows and knows how to safely and comprehensively implement drug and fluid therapy for a child who is suddenly ill and requires intensive care.
• Is committed and responsible in the development of his own theoretical and operational skills in the nursing work of a child and family who is suddenly ill and requires intensive care.
