Objectives

The student
- is able to implement the postnatal midwifery
- recognises disorders in the maternal wellbeing at postnatal phase
- is able to take care and observe the newborn baby
- guides the families in taking care of the baby and breastfeeding
- is able to assist the medical professional in the newborn baby examinations
- is able to give the relationship and family planning counselling to the families

Content

- breastfeeding guidance
- postnatal guidance and support of families
- most common postnatal complications and disorders
- care and observation of the newborn baby
- an examination performed by a paediatrician and the calmette vaccination
- support of early interaction
- management of a postnatal examination

Prerequisites

Participation in course on Postnatal Midwifery Care

Assessment criteria, pass/fail

Passed
The student
- meets the pregnant woman, family and work group members professionally
- guides and supports the woman and her family after birth in the customer oriented way
- is implementing the postnatal midwifery safely and responsibly
- follows the confidentiality and data protection guidelines
- follows in his / her actions the agreed rules of the supervised practical training
- evaluates her/his own competence realistically and is able to give and receive feedback

Failed
The student
- meets the pregnant woman, family and work group members unprofessionally
- withdraws from patient guidance and is not able to support postnatally women and their families
- does not recognize the boundaries of his/her expertise, is endangering patient safety
- violates confidentiality or patient privacy
- fails to follow the agreed rules for supervised practice
- evaluates her/his own competence unrealistically and is unable to receive feedback
