Objectives

In the course, student gets to know the basics of land use planning and community planning.
After the course, student understands the importance of community planning as a basis for architectural and infrastructure planning.

Student can analyze the community structure and produce documents to support building planning. He understands the planning system and plan levels, can read plan maps and recognize plan markings. The student understands the zoning process according to Finnish legislation and the related participatory planning.

Student understands the importance of preserving natural biodiversity as an important part of community development. Student knows how to consider the landscape and environment, the carbon footprint of construction and technical systems in architectural design.

Student can prepare a plan draft for a small residental area. He knows how to use digital databases that contain source data for regional planning. Student knows how to prepare a block and plot plan and the documents necessary to present them.

Basics and methods of landscape and built environment analysis.
Basics of community planning
Urban nature
Planning system, plan levels, plan maps and markings.
Local detailed plan and plot plan
Laws, regulations and instructions supporting the content.
Area definitions according to Finnish legislation
Digital tools in regional planning

Prerequisites

Sufficient prior knowledge of the subject area

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Student has difficulty grasping the basic ideas of the subject and therefore applying learned topics into practice is difficult. In the exercises, the argumentation is fumbling and there are gaps in the previously learned knowledge.

Activity in the course and tasks is satisfactory or weak, in which case your own share of group work remains small.

Student examines and evaluates topics from his own perspective. He knows how to work in a group and recognizes his interaction skills. Student takes responsibility for his own performance

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

Student outlines and structures the basic ideas of the subject of the course and knows how to apply learned topics into practiice, and can explain professionally the reasons and consequences of the choices made in the exercises.

Activity in the course and assignments is good. Student takes responsibility and commits not only to his own activities but also to the activities of the group. The work progresses in the course consistently applying the things learned and the guidance and feedback received.

Student examines and evaluates things from both his own and the local community's point of view. He knows how to cooperate responsibly and is ready to develop his interaction skills.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Student understands the topics taught in the course as well as previously learned ones and knows how to apply them versatilely and creatively into practice. Student can explain and justify the reasons and consequences of the choices made in the exercises in an expert and professional manner.

The student has participated in teaching and group work in a committed, active and constructive manner. He knows how to cooperate responsibly and develops both his own and the group's interaction.

The student examines and evaluates himself and the community or work group in which he works in his professional field.
