Objectives

This course provides students with the essential knowledge and practical skills to conceptualize, develop, and publish their own small-scale game. It’s a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of game production.

This course serves as an introduction to the project work in the game industry. Upon successful completion of this course, students will have gained the knowledge and skills to:

Game Development:
• Comprehend the game development lifecycle from concept to release.
• Project Management:

Develop skills in planning:
• Team collaboration, and time management.
• Work in a game production team

Create Polished Game Project:
• Collaborate on a functional game project applying learned skills.
• Design and implement a game with one or more levels with at least one core mechanic and basic AI for the game, simple UI for front-end, in-game events and end-game scenarios.

Receive Constructive Feedback:
• Develop the ability to receive and incorporate feedback for improvement.

Content

Introduction to Game Development:
• Overview of the game development lifecycle.
• Understanding the role of game developers in the industry.

Project Planning and Management:
• Skills in project planning, task allocation, and time management.
• Effective communication and collaboration within game development teams.
• Feedback and Improvement
• Teamwork and Leadership
• Pitching and Presentations

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student:
• Is able to design and implement character that can be controlled via player interactions
• Is able to apply a range of transforms to input data to control player interactions within a 2D environment
• Create characters and environments for games

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student:
• Is able to design and implement a range of AI for NPC characters and player threats within this 2D world
• Is able to design and implement 2D character with animations for a game
• Work within a team to control scope and complete a 2D game project within the time allotted

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student:
• Is able to apply learned skills for building a final package for deployment to PC
• Knows learned skills for releasing a 2D game
