Objectives (course unit)

The student strengthens and enhances their professional competence in basic nursing through clinical training in various areas of nursing, in line with the evolving theoretical knowledge and language skills acquired during their studies.

After completing the training, the student
• knows how to act professionally, ethically, and in a client-centered way
• can work safely for patients/clients in nursing care, promoting health
• can implement basic nursing care
• understands the significance of multiprofessional work
• has participated in patient guidance
• understands the principles of documentation according to the nursing process
• knows the principles of employee competency and self-management
• understands the Finnish social and healthcare service system as part of patient care
• understands the importance of evidence-based nursing and is able to utilize research data

Basic Clinical Training in Nursing

When selecting supervised clinical placements for clinical trainings 2-9, a student shoud consider the broad and varied placements across different areas of nursing practice in accordance with EU directives. Supervised clinical placements should be conducted with patients of different ages in primary healthcare, specialized healthcare, inpatient units, and outpatient healthcare, ensuring the development of skills in both somatic and mental health and substance abuse care. Supervised clinical placements may be in public or private healthcare or the third sector.

Assessment criteria, pass/fail (course unit)

Pass:
The student
• takes responsibility for their own learning and actions and knows the limits of their expertise
• adheres to nursing laws, ethical guidelines, and principles
• is capable of acting professionally and appropriately within the work community, and follows the guidelines of the workplace and the guidelines set for the training
• values the client/patient and sees them as an expert and active participant in their own life
• gains experience in professional nursing interaction with clients/patients and their close ones
• familiarizes oneself with documentation
• understands the importance of patient safety and the prevention of adverse events in nursing
• can identify health risk factors in clients/patients and familiarizes oneself with assessing the patient's functional capacity
• participates actively in nursing activities and learning situations, and gains experience in organizing their own work
• is able to receive and provide feedback
• understands working according to the principles of economic and sustainable development
• can assist patients with daily basic activities in a client-centered manner and according to a rehabilitative approach
• understands the significance of primary nursing
• familiarizes oneself with patient care pathways
• gains experience in patient guidance
• knows the principles of infection prevention and acts aseptically (good hand hygiene, the proper use of protective equipment and good aseptic work order)
• can implement basic patient care
• gains experience in monitoring basic vital functions and is able to perform related nursing interventions under supervision
• is able to safely administer medication and fluid therapy under supervision
• familiarizes oneself with learning materials and unit care guidelines and acts accordingly

Fail:
The student
• does not take responsibility for their own learning and actions and does not know the limits of their expertise
• does not adhere to nursing laws, ethical guidelines, and principles
• is unable to act professionally and appropriately within the work community, and does not follow the guidelines of the workplace and the guidelines set for the training (e.g. goals, planned shifts and evaluations are missing, does not adhere to work hours, does not notify absences as agreed, or the required number of hours for the period is not fulfilled)
• does not know how to appreciate the client/patient and fails to see them as an expert and active participant in their own life
is unable to engage in professional nursing interaction with clients/patients and their close ones
• does not familiarize oneself with documentation
• does not understand the importance of patient safety and the prevention of adverse events in nursing or compromises patient safety
• cannot identify health risk factors in clients/patients and has not familiarized oneself with assessing the patient's functional capacity
• does not participate actively in nursing activities and learning situations, and Is unable to organize their own work
• is unable to receive and provide feedback
• does not understand the meaning of working according to the principles of economic and sustainable development
• cannot assist patients with daily basic activities in a client-centered manner and according to a rehabilitative approach
• does not understand the significance of primary nursing
• has not familiarized oneself with patient care pathways
• has not practiced patient guidance
• does not knows the principles of infection prevention and is not able to work aseptically (proper hand hygiene, use of protective equipment and aseptic work order)
• cannot implement basic patient care
• has not gained experience in monitoring basic vital functions and is unable to perform related nursing interventions under supervision
• is unable to safely administer medication and fluid therapy under supervision
• has not familiarized oneself with learning materials and unit care guidelines and does not act accordingly
• behaves dishonestly during the training

Location and time

training in weeks 19-22.

Exam schedules

The possible incomplete training hours (maximum 27hours) can be compensated in next clinical training

Student workload

this includes
153 hours in clinical training
9 hours of orientation, reflection, personal goals workshop and tasks (familiarizing with Workseed, lääkehoitopassi and forming personal objectives)

Content scheduling

Orientation, goals workshop and reflection are mandatory to participate
Clinical training is done in weeks 19-22

Completion alternatives

Studification should be agreed with tutor teacher at least three weeks before the beginning of the training.

Practical training and working life cooperation

Clinical training is done in a healthcare unit.
Suitable placement for the clinical training 2 is long term care facility, supported living facility, elderly care home etc. where basic care skills can be practiced
