Objectives (course unit)
On this course, students will explore key applications of fluid dynamics and heat transfer in HVAC engineering. Upon completion, students will be able to:
• Identify the basic concepts of heat transfer and fluid dynamics.
• Recognize the primary HVAC applications of fluid dynamics and heat transfer.
• Apply fluid dynamics in sizing and balancing HVAC networks.
• Perform calculations necessary for pump or fan sizing and selection.
• Conduct heat exchanger sizing.
Content (course unit)
• Basic concepts of heat transfer and fluid dynamics.
• Sizing and hydraulic balancing of HVAC networks.
• Pipe sizing in closed and open systems using sizing charts and calculations.
• Single-resistance components in piping systems.
• Performance characteristics of heat exchangers, pumps, and fans including their performance curves.
• Forms of heat transfer and heat loss calculations in flat and piping cases.
Prerequisites (course unit)
Engineering Physics for Building Services, HVAC Systems and Basic Physics in Technology or equivalent knowledge
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)
The student recognizes the basic concepts of heat transfer and fluid mechanics. The student can perform simple calculations in fluid dynamics and heat transfer.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)
The student can apply the concepts of heat transfer and fluid mechanics to practical HVAC engineering problems. The student can perform applied calculations in fluid dynamics.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)
The student masters the concepts and calculation principles of heat transfer and fluid mechanics. Additionally, the student can adeptly apply them in various practical HVAC engineering problems and calculations.

Student workload
Opintojakso alkaa 1.periodilla ja jatkuu 2.periodille. Opintojakso on jaksotettu kahteen vaihteeseen niin, että se tukee myös rinnakkaisen opintojakson 5T00EH92-3003 LVI - mittaukset ja laboratoriotyöt teemoja.
Content scheduling
Aloitetaan LVI-tekniikan virtaustekniiksillä sovelluksilla (välikoe 1) ja jatketaan lämmönsiirtotekniikkaan (välikoe 2).
Completion alternatives
Mahdolliset AHOT-menettelyt sovittava 3 viikon kuluessa opintojakson aloituksesta.
