Introduction to Preparatory Programme and Higher Education Studies (5 cr)

Objectives (course unit)

The student identifies their own strengths and resources in academic planning. The student knows what Finnish language skills and study and digital skills are required in higher education studies. The student recognizes development needs in these skills in their own case and knows how to communicate them. The student is familiar with digital environments in education and can operate in them. The student knows how to use cloud services for processing and sharing information. The student can identify key points from various texts related to higher education and make notes from them. The student can understand and record key points from spoken language as well. The language proficiency level in language studies is B1.1.

Content (course unit)

In this study module, we will explore the Finnish higher education system and universities as learning environments. We will pay attention to our own strengths and resources in our studies and create a personal study plan. During the study module, we will become familiar with various digital tools and study and note-taking techniques. In Finnish language studies, our focus will be on vocabulary related to higher education and practicing notetaking and information retrieval. We will cover the basics of information retrieval skills and criticism of sources.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

The student identifies and can use the concepts related to the course topic with support. The student understands what one needs to do to improve. The student has participated in the course and completed the course assignments.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

The student can use the concepts related to the course topic effectively and apply them in practice. The student can assess their own proficiency in Finnish language and digital skills. The student has actively contributed to the group and performed well in completing course assignments.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

The student has an excellent understanding of the concepts related to the course topic and can apply their learning in practice. The student can analyze matters related to the course topic as well as their own proficiency and development. The student is highly motivated and committed. The student takes responsibility for their own and their group's performance.

Assessment criteria, pass/fail (course unit)

Fail
The student has not participated in the course lessons or group work and has not submitted assignments on time.
