Objectives (course unit)

The student masters the basic basic concepts of strength. The student knows the basic theory of strength studies. The student is able to design simple machine parts and structures in normal static load cases. The student is familiar with the basic concepts and quantities of 2D and 3D strength studies and the relationships between them. The student masters the basics of static damage theories. The student is able to control the strength calculation principles of machine parts in a fatigue load situation.

Content (course unit)

Basic concepts of strength, tension, stretch and slip. The connection between tension and deformation. Direct rod pull and compression. Clean cut. Torsion. Cross section geometric quantities. Bending straight beam. Hyperstatic structures. General tension and deformation mode. Material equations for linearly elastic material. Level tension mode and level change mode. Principal stresses and principal directions. Failure theories. Basics of fatigue measurement. Buckling.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

The student recognizes the basic concepts and quantities of 2D and 3D strength studies and their connections. The student recognizes the basics of static damage theories. The student performs routine tasks. The student is able to dimension the machine parts in a tiring load situation. The student is able to give and receive feedback. Students take responsibility for their own performance. The student is able to give and receive feedback.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

The student is familiar with the basic concepts and quantities of 2D and 3D strength studies and the relationships between them. The student is able to apply the basic theory of strength studies and is able to compare different solutions. Students are able to apply the basics of static damage theories in solving the problem. The student can independently measure machine parts in a tiring load situation. The student is able to give and receive feedback actively and constructively. Students take responsibility for their own performance.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

The student understands more widely the basic concepts and quantities of 2D and 3D strength studies and the connections between them. The student is able to apply and is able to generalize the basics of static damage theories in solving the problem. The student is able to find solutions and justify them when designing machine parts in a static and tiring load situation.
