Objectives (course unit)

The student
- knows the theory of postpartum midwifery
- knows the normal postpartum physiology, care and guidance
- is able to observe postpartum abnormalities and knows the care of them
- knows how to monitor a newborn, recognizes abnormalities and knows their treatments
- is able to detect health problems and complications and knows the care of the newborn
- is able to support early interaction, guide parents in parenting skills and promote family wellbeing
- knows how to promote sexual and reproductive health of the family during the postpartum period
- knows how to work in a baby friendly manner and understands the principles of promoting breastfeeding
- is able to execute care practices that promote breastfeeding from prenatal to postpartum period

Content (course unit)

- Postpartum midwifery
- Normal physiology of the postpartum period
- Abnormalities and treatments during the postpartum period
- Monitoring and basic care of the newborn
- Health problems and complications of the newborn
- Early interaction and infant calming methods
- Sexual and reproductive health during the postpartum period
- Breastfeeding counselling training

Prerequisites (course unit)

The student must have completed the nursing studies except the Bachelor’s Thesis. The student cannot participate until Supervised clinical training 1-7 and all theoretical and clinical nursing studies are completed. The student has participated in Midwifery Care During Childbirth -module.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

The Student
- recognises the basic theory of postpartum midwifery
- knows the normal postpartum physiology, care and guidance
- knows some postpartum abnormalities and basics of the care
- knows how to observe a newborn, recognizes some abnormalities and knows their treatments
- is able to detect some health problems and complications and knows the care of the newborn
- is able to recognise the need for early interaction, guide parents in parenting skills and promote family wellbeing but is not able to present reasoning
- knows how to promote sexual and reproductive health of the family during the postpartum period
- knows how to work in a baby friendly manner and understands the basic principles of promoting breastfeeding
- knows the basics of breastfeeding

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

The Student
- knows the theory of postpartum midwifery well
- knows the normal postpartum physiology, care and guidance
- is able to observe postpartum abnormalities and knows the care of them
- knows how to monitor a newborn, recognizes abnormalities and knows their treatments
- is able to detect health problems and complications and knows the care of the newborn
- is able to support early interaction, guide parents in parenting skills and promote family wellbeing
- knows how to promote sexual and reproductive health of the family during the postpartum period
- knows how to work in a baby friendly manner and understands the principles of promoting breastfeeding
- is able to execute care practices that promote breastfeeding from prenatal to postpartum period

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

The Student
- knows the theory of postpartum midwifery broadly and deeply
- knows the normal postpartum physiology, care and guidance i detail and is able to apply it to patient centered guidance
- is able to observe postpartum abnormalities and knows the patient centered care of them
- knows how to monitor a newborn, recognizes abnormalities and knows their treatments and how to guide parents
- is able to detect health problems and complications and knows the care of the newborn
- is able to support early interaction, guide parents in parenting skills and promote family wellbeing
- knows how to promote sexual and reproductive health of the family during the postpartum period
- knows broadly how to work in a baby friendly manner and understands the principles of promoting breastfeeding
- is able to execute care practices that promote breastfeeding from prenatal to postpartum period in a creative manner
