Assessment methods and criteria
Students' course participation will be reviewed based on the following sections:
- performance in the oral exam (40 % weight in the evaluation)
- performance in the written exam (30 % weight in the evaluation)
- performance in the listening comprehension exam (30 % weight in the evaluation)
The student is required to take part in all the exams in order to receive a grade.
In all the exam sections, students are mostly evaluated based on how much knowledge and comprehension they can show regarding to the course topics. The exam material will be mostly based on the course material and topics. However, utilizing knowledge that was acquired outside the course is highly recommended.
The grading will be, for most part, based on the following performance levels:
- The grade 5: 90 % success
- The grade 4: 75-89 % success
- The grade 3: 60-74 % success
- The grade 2: 45-59 % success
- The grade 1: 30-44 % success
- The grade 0: Less than 30 % success
In the oral exam, the performance will be evaluated based on the following aspects: comprehensibility and fluency of the speech, accuracy and versatility of word choices, and ability to utilize most common and necessary structures in a conversation about nursing practices and/most common health issues.
In the written exam, the performance will be evaluated based on how well the student can handle the written communication related to nursing practices and/or most common health issues.
In the listening comprehension, the performance will be evaluated based on the student's ability to recognize and find out of the most important information of treatment descriptions and/or patient discussions.

Teaching methods
The course is, first and foremost, designed for 23SUSO students. Please, contact our Finnish language counsellor Ella Hakala (ella.hakala@tuni.fi) to hear about other options. The language use of this course is approximately on the B1 level but the course can be suitable for A2.2 and B2 students as well.
***
In the course, we will go through basic vocabulary and structures that you will need as a nurse. The main focus will be on basic anatomy, most common symptoms and health issues, background information, and patient discussions. If our schedule allows it, we will explore written communication as well.
In classroom meetings, we will discuss the study material and related topics and exercises. In addition to this, you will have a lot of self-study exercises that support and expand the classroom teaching.
Learning materials
You will receive the study material in the form of handouts and online material.
You do not need to use a study book in the course but if you want to have more self-study, I recommend that you purchase or borrow the study book Hoidetaan suomeksi by Mustonen, Sippola and Tuononen.
Student workload
2-4 x 45 min. lessons a week + independent work at home (1-3 hours a week) + exams (1-2 tuntia)
