Osaamistavoitteet (Opintojakso)

After completing this course the student:
- Knows the principles of essential measurement and monitoring methods used in evaluation of the state of the environment;
- Can use equipment and modelling software utilized in environmental evaluations; and,
- Can do critical evaluation of measurements and their connection to the state of environment and legislation.

Sisältö (Opintojakso)

A selection of following themes:
- Air quality monitoring, fine particle and gas emissions;
- Measurement of noise and radiation;
- Modelling of noise and air pollution; and,
- Water monitoring and different measurement technologies.

Writing Scientific Reports in English, Fluid Mechanics and Thermophysiscs, Electrodynamics and Magnetism, Oscillation, Waves and Modern Physics, Physics Laboratories

Arviointikriteerit, tyydyttävä (1-2) (Opintojakso)

Student is able to analyse simple noise and particle modelling cases both qualitatively and quantitatively. Student needs extra support to be able to complete given tasks. Exercises have been done, but results might be slightly erroneous.

Arviointikriteerit, hyvä (3-4) (Opintojakso)

Student is able to use correct terminology and presents justified qualitative and quantitative analysis. Exercises are done completely, and results and analysis are correct. Results are at least briefly commented.

Arviointikriteerit, kiitettävä (5) (Opintojakso)

Student shows the ability to do versatile qualitative and quantitative analysis. Student has a realistic knowledge of the limitations of the theoretical framework. Reports are comprehensive and well-structured. Student is able to show his or her own conclusions clearly.

Arviointimenetelmät ja arvioinnin perusteet

Students will get credit from every activity available: exercise problems, lectures, modelling exercises, measurement exercise, exam and reports. No single activity is mandatory, but not participating in them will lower the grade.

There are points available from different activities as follows:
Exam 30 pts
Exercise problems 20 pts
Modelling exercises 30 pts
Measurement exercise 20 pts

9 hours of lectures, 30 hours of guided modelling exercises, 60 hours of independent studying

Sisällön jaksotus

The course will begin with few lectures on physics and mathematics of noise propagation and modelling. After the lectures the course will consist of computer modelling exercises with SoundPLAN. In April, if the weather conditions are suitable, there will be a measurement exercise (traffic noise).

In the curriculum it says that this course includes aerosol physics, but that part of the course has been moved to the Industrial Emissions course and the noise portion of that course is instead moved in this course.

Student participates and shows skills in some of the activities, but doesn't have a good grasp on noise modelling and measurements as a whole.

Student participates and shows skills in most of the activities, but there might be small mistakes in reporting, for example they don't use correct terms or they are not able to correctly analyze modelling results.

Student shows good skills in all activities.
