The student

Prerequisites (course unit)
30 ects of first year studies completed, including Pharmacotherapy and Medical Calculations. Participation in course Intravenous Fluid Therapy and Blood Transfusion.

- identify the effects of major surgical diseases on the patient's health, everyday survival and the patient's
- understand the importance of the guidance of the surgical patient and his relatives at different stages of the nursing care process
- know the importance of documentation and informing in ensuring the continuity of patient care

The student

- masters, with justification, the main methods of helping the surgical patient in nursing

- is able to guide the surgical patient and his / her relatives in a patient-oriented way at different stages of the treatment process using evidence-based information
- is able to document assessments and communicate orally, ensuring the continuity of patient care

Surgical nursing, total required performance:
Part 1: Theory of Nursing: Exam in exam room. Numerical Assessment 1-5.
Part 2: Calculation: Exam in exam room. Assessment: pass / fail.
Part 3: Small group work. CBCL. Assessment: pass / fail.
Part 4: Seminar. Assessment: pass / fail.
Part 5: Nutrition in Surgical Nursing. Assessment: pass / fail
Part 6: Orientation to skills training. Assessment: pass/ fail.
The theory and medical calculation exam in the exam room: 13.3.-24.3.2023
Re-exams are available as follows:
1: Re-exam: 24.4.-29.4.2023
2: Re-exam: 15.5.-20.5.2023
The online nutrition test on Moodle must have been successfully completed by 24.3.2023 in order to pass this component of the course. There is no restriction on the number of attempts. Failure to successfully complete the test within the given time frame results in failure to complete this part of the course.
An opportunity to improve your course grade will be provided in conjunction with the first re-exam. This requires you to repeat all the sections included in the course. In addition, you will need to notify your teacher of your intent 2 weeks before the exam date.
All tasks (including re-submissions) must be completed by 24.3.2023. Late submissions will not be accepted. Failure to complete any part of the course will result in failure to successfully complete the course.
Assessment methods and criteria
The course orientation is compulsory. Failure to attend means failure to continue on the course.
All the listed components of the course must be successfully completed within the given time frames and task instructions in order to complete the course. Failure to complete any part of the course will mean that the student will need to enroll on another course to complete the relevant section.
Tasks to compensate for absenteeism will not be available nor will late submissions be accepted.
The course includes seminar work, which requires active participation in the group
working. The task is assessed as pass/fail based on the assessment criteria. There is an obligation to attend seminar presentations. No alternative tasks will be provided. Failure to be present will result in failure to complete the course.
The course includes CBCL group work, which requires active participation in the group
working. The task is assessed as pass/fail based on the assessment criteria. There is an obligation to attend the CBCL induction and the seminar. No alternative tasks will be provided. Failure to be present will result in failure to complete the course.
The course includes 4 hours of mandatory orientation to Mandatory Orientation to skills training. This will take place in Taitokeskus.
A delay of 10 minutes is considered an absence.
Any absences (for whatever reason) must be compensated by participation in another group.
Pre-tasks for Mandatory Orientation to skills training must be completed. Failure to complete the pre-task will result in failure to attend the skills training session.

Lectures, small group work/discussions, cbcl, seminar, skills training (at taitokeskus), independent study.
Scheduled teaching sessions are predominantly done as face-to-face sessions. Exceptions are possible when considered necessary by the teacher. No hybrid teaching available.
