Objectives (course unit)

The student
-is able to recognize children’s symptoms of mental health and substance abuse problems and is able to assess the need for care accordingly.
-manages the principles of therapeutic interaction with children, adolescents and their families in specialized services and recognizes significant other’s need for support.
-manages the principles of trauma-orientated care
-recognizes different nursing and psychotherapy approaches in mental health and substance abuse nursing
-knows the importance of the feedback and clinical supervision in his /hers own professional growth and evaluation.
-is able to take into account societal, communal and individual approaches towards mental health and substance abuse care in his/her own work.
-acknowledges sustainability issues in mental health care as well as in his or hers own actions.

-therapeutic nurse-patient relationship with children, adolescents and their families
-recovery approach and supporting significant others

Prerequisites (course unit)

At the beginning of the elective vocational studies, the student must have completed 135 credits. These should include theoretical studies and orientation to practical training of the area which the student has chosen for the elective studies, as well as courses in anatomy and physiology. The required area is Mental Health and Substance Abuse Nursing. It is recommended that the student has completed the supervised practical in the area of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Nursing .

Nursing
The student
-is able independently and as a member of the interdisciplinary team to recognize the caring needs of patients in specialized services.
-is able to provide care for patients with mental health and substance abuse problems (children, adolescents) and for their significant others.
-acknowledges the principles of clinical supervision from the viewpoints of professional growth and quality of care.
-is able to give and take feedback and to use this information to enhance his/hers professional growth.
-recognizes societal, communal and individual viewpoints towards mental health and substance abuse problems in his/hers own thinking and attitudes.

Psychology:
The student
-knows the most common psychological assessments and psychotherapy approaches with mental health and substance abuse problems.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

Nursing
The student
-is able independently and as a member of the interdisciplinary team to recognize and assess the caring needs of patients in specialized services.
-is able to use widely mental health nursing interventions in patient care (children, adolescents) and with patient’s significant others.
-knows and is able to recognize different mental health nursing approaches in practice
-recognizes the importance of interdisciplinary co-operation in mental health and substance abuse services
-understands the meaning of clinical supervision in professional growth and for the quality of care.
-is able to evaluate his/hers professional performance, give and take feedback and is using this information to enhance his/hers professional growth.
-recognizes and is able critically evaluate societal, communal and individual viewpoints towards mental health and substance abuse problems in his/hers own thinking and attitudes.

Psychology:
The student
-knows the most common psychological assessments and psychotherapy approaches and is able to use this information in the care planning.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

Nursing
The student
-is able independently and as a member of the interdisciplinary team to recognize and critically assess the caring needs of patients and their significant others in specialized services.
-knows and is able to recognize different mental health nursing approaches in his/her own professional practice and as a member of an interdisciplinary team can critically assess their applicability for the patient.
-manages theoretically the use of clinical supervision for the professional growth and quality of care.
-is able to critically reflect his/her own professional performance, is able to give and take feedback and to develop his/hers own professional practice by using this information together with theoretical knowledge.
-is able to critically evaluate societal, communal and individual viewpoints towards mental health and substance abuse problems in his/hers own thinking and attitudes and considers solutions towards acknowledged grievances.

Psychology:
The student
-knows the most common psychological assessments and psychotherapy approaches and is able to widely use this information in the care planning.
