Objectives (course unit)

The student
- performs the normal vaginal birth independently
- is able to observe the signs of foetal distress
- recognizes the abnormalities in labour progress and manages them
- recognizes the differences between low and high risk births and adopts his/her actions and observations appropriately
- is able to assist during the abnormal birth
- is able to the support physiology of labour and development of positive birth experience
- develops the expertise of midwifery during childbirth

Content (course unit)

- midwifery during normal and abnormal delivery
- assistance in abnormal labour and preparation for caesarean section
- assessment of labour progress and observation of abnormalities
- observation of maternal wellbeing during labour
- management of pain relief, fluid therapy and medication
- clinical and technology based observation of foetal wellbeing
- perineal support, episiotomy cutting and suturing, suturing of perineal tears
- meaning of interventions performed during childbirth
- postoperative care and observation of a woman given birth by caesarean section
- maternal postpartum observation
- care and wellbeing observation of a newborn baby
- 4 weeks supervised clinical training in delivery rooms

Prerequisites (course unit)

Supervised Clinical Training, Midwifery during Childbirth I completed.
Two of the three supervised clinical trainings of Midwifery during Childbirth should be done at the university level hospital.

Assessment criteria, pass/fail (course unit)

Passed
The student
- is able to implement the holistic midwifery care safely and responsibly
- is able to recognize/ prevent changes/complications in the wellbeing of woman in labour and foetus / woman at postnatal phase and newborn baby, and is working as the active member of multi-professional team
- is able to use and justify the use of observation methods during birth properly
- has knowledge of midwifery care regarding normal and abnormal birth, recognises gap of knowledge and seeks to improve evidence based knowledge of midwifery
- is able to perform the normal and abnormal birth safely and in the customer oriented way
- meets the woman in labour and her support person and work group members professionally
- guides the woman in labour and her family in the customer oriented way
- follows the confidentiality and data protection guidelines
- follows in his / her actions the agreed rules of the supervised practical training
- evaluates her/his own competence in midwifery during childbirth and development of the expertise in midwifery realistically and is able to give and receive feedback


Failed
The student
- is not able to plan, implement and assess the care of the women in labour safely, there are wide shortcomings in knowledge of midwifery care during normal and abnormal childbirth,
- is not able to observe responsibly the maternal and foetal wellbeing during labour and at postnatal phase with the adequate methods, is neither able to anticipate or recognize changes in these and does not report these ahead
- meets the pregnant woman, family and work group members unprofessionally
- violates confidentiality or patient privacy
- fails to follow the agreed rules for supervised practice
- evaluates her/his own competence of midwifery care during childbirth unrealistically and is unable to receive feedback
