Natural and Medical Sciences in Midwifery 1 (2 cr)

Objectives (course unit)

The student
- is able to describe the structure and functions of reproductive organs during the lifespan
- knows the physiology of pregnancy, labour, postpartum recovery and breastfeeding
- knows the normal development of foetus and the main genetic disorders
- knows the physiology of normal neonatal period and the most common diseases of newborn babies

Content (course unit)

- anatomy and physiology of reproductive organs for midwives
- genetics and hereditary diseases
- obstetric anaesthesiology
- perinatology for midwives

Prerequisites (course unit)

The student must have completed 135 credits of nursing studies including Anatomy and Physiology and courses of Perioperative Nursing, Maternity Care and Gynaecological Nursing. Supervised clinical training could not be started before completing all theoretical and clinical nursing studies.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

The student
- knows the anatomy and physiology of reproductive organs
- knows the physiology of pregnancy, labour, postpartum recovery and breastfeeding
- knows the normal development of foetus and the main genetic and other disorders and diseases of the newborn babies

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

The student
- knows in detail the anatomy and physiology of reproductive organs
- knows in detail the physiology of pregnancy, labour, postpartum recovery and breastfeeding
- knows extensively the normal development of foetus and the main genetic and other disorders and diseases of the newborn babies

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

The student
- is able to implement the knowledge of reproductive organs’ anatomy and physiology to the midwifery practice
- is able to implement the knowledge of physiology of pregnancy, labour, postpartum recovery and breastfeeding to the midwifery practice
- is able to discuss the meaning of the normal development of foetus and the main genetic and other disorders and diseases of newborn babies to the midwifery practice

Osa 2 Embryologia. Hyväksytty/Hylätty. Hyväksyttyyn suoritukseen edellytetään 100% osallistumista luentoihin.
Osa 3 Genetiikka. Hyväksytty/Hylätty. Hyväksyttyyn suoritukseen edellytetään 100% osallistumista luentoihin.
Osa 4 Anestesiologia. Hyväksytty/hylätty. Hyväksyttyyn suoritukseen edellytetään 100% osallistumista luentoihin.
Osa 5 Neonatologia. Hyväksytty/hylätty. Hyväksyttyyn suoritukseen edellytetään 100% osallistumista luentoihin.

Itsenäinen opiskelu ennen kurssin alkua: Bjålie et al. Ihminen, fysiologia ja anatomia. Luvusta Lisääntyminen seuraavat asiat: Luvun johdanto-osa, joka on otsikoitu Sukuelimet. Miehen sukuelimet ja sukupuolihormonit. Osasta Naisen sukuelimet ja sukupuolihormonit; Munasolujen tuotanto ja kuukautiskierto. (Siis miehen anatomia ja fysiologia sekä kuukautiskierto)
