Objectives (course unit)
The student
- masters essential evidence based knowledge and skills of the advanced clinical nursing practice of long- term patients;
- masters essential knowledge about continuity and health promotion for the advanced clinical nursing practice of long- term patients;
- masters promoting of coping of the patient and family.
Content (course unit)
- assessment of care needs, planning of care, implementation, and evaluation in long- term conditions
- exacerbations and acute-on-chronic situations with long term conditions
- demanding situations of long- term patients in varied care facilities
- evidence based nursing care of patients with long term conditions
- self-care guidance for a client with long term condition
- palliative care
Prerequisites (course unit)
Before starting the advanced studies of Medical–Surgical Nursing, the student must have completed 135 credits of studies including Anatomy and Physiology and all the middle phase courses concerning Medical Nursing and Surgical Nursing, including all orientations to clinical trainings of those subjects.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)
The student
- understands, by providing rationales, evidence based knowledge on advanced clinical nursing of long- term patients;
- knows long term conditions’ fluid- and pharmacotherapy and calculates accurately;
- knows the theoretical basis of the different stages of the nursing process for long- term patients’ while taking individuality, family and health promotion into consideration in advanced clinical nursing;
- knows the main principles of varied observation and nursing methods in advanced clinical nursing for long term conditions;
- understands ethical principles in nursing and knows how those are used in ethical decision making with long term patients in advanced clinical nursing;
- recognises the meaning of sustainability, patient safety, and professionalism with long term patients in advanced clinical nursing;
- knows the principles of guidance while taking into consideration the needs of the person with long term condition and the family in advanced clinical nursing.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)
The student
- partially masters evidence based knowledge on demanding clinical nursing of long- term patients;
- mainly masters long term conditions’ fluid- and pharmacotherapy and calculates accurately;
- knows how to utilize knowledge in different stages of the nursing process for long- term patients’ while taking into consideration individuality, family and health promotion in advanced clinical nursing;
- understands varied observation and nursing methods in advanced clinical nursing for long term conditions;
- understands ethical principles in nursing and knows how those are used in ethical decision making with long term patients in advanced clinical nursing;
- understands the meaning of sustainability, patient safety, and professionalism with long term patients in advanced clinical nursing;
- knows the principles of individual guidance while taking into consideration the needs of the person with long term condition and the family in advanced clinical nursing.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)
The student
- masters and is able to implement comprehensively evidence based knowledge on advanced clinical nursing of long- term patients;
- masters long term conditions’ fluid- and pharmacotherapy comprehensively and calculates accurately;
- is able to analyse and implement knowledge in different stages of the nursing process for long- term patients individually while taking family and health promotion into consideration in advanced clinical nursing;
- masters varied observation and nursing methods comprehensively in advanced clinical nursing for long term conditions;
- understands ethical principles in nursing and is able to implement them in ethical decision making with long term patients in advanced clinical nursing;
- understands the meaning of sustainability, patient safety, and professionalism with long term patients in advanced clinical nursing;
- masters individual guidance taking the needs of the person with long term condition and the family into consideration in advanced clinical nursing.

Course is a part of Advanced studies. Prior to course student must have completed 135 credits of nursing studies (including pharmacotherapy, anatomy and physiology, studies in Medical-Surgical nursing).
Mandatory participation in Orientation lecture and small group sessions. All tasks must be completed within the given timeframes. Written assignments must be done according to TAMK/Tuni's written work instructions and template. References must fulfill evidence-based nursing requirements.

Exam answers creating potential or permanent damage to a patient or endangering patient safety will lead to failed examination.
