Objectives (course unit)
Student understands basic principles and variables used in mechanics of material in 2D- and 3D. Student knows basics of failure analysis. Student is able to analyse and design simple machine components under fatique loading.
Content (course unit)
General state of stress and strain. The stress- strain relation of linearly elastic material. Plane stress and plane strain. Principal stresses and directions. Failure theories. Fundamentals of fatigue analysis. Buckling.
Location and time
Beginning: On Thursday 22th of August 2019.
Exam schedules
Toteutuksen aikana: 15.12.2020.
Uusinnat: NN.01.2021 ja NN.02.2021.
Evaluation methods and criteria
The grade of the course depends on the exam. The grade is highly influenced by well done practical works.
Assessment scale
0-5
Teaching methods
Contact learning, exercises, practical works, exam.
Learning materials
Book: Tapio Salmi & Sami Pajunen: Lujuusoppi, Pressus Oy.
Student workload
Contact learning 28 hours, self -contained learning 53 hours.
Content scheduling
The course consists of lectures, practical works and an exam.
Practical works: These will be given during the course. Their solutions will be returned for evaluation by contact hour by the date stated on the task paper in a clean, stapled print. Late returns will weaken the course grade. The solutions are handed out in sufficiently clear handwriting and scanned form or as a Mathcad document in PDF format. If done correctly and returned on time, you can earn up to 3 extra points to the exam.
Exam: Only the exam will take place, there are no intermediate exams. You will be able to take the exam after completing the practical works. The use of a calculator is allowed in the exam, but only a book of formulas is allowed along with the calculator and writing instruments. At the exam, a collection of formulas will be distributed. The maximum score of the exam is 24 points. A successful completion of the course requires that the student receives at least 8 credit points in total for the exam and the additional points for the practical works.

Assessment criteria - fail (0) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)
The student cannot independently perform the simplest strength calculations.
Assessment criteria - satisfactory (1-2) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)
The student understand the basic concepts of strengths and the relationships between them.
Assessment criteria - good (3-4) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)
The student can determine the equivalent stresses corresponding to the stress state in order to evaluate the strength of the structure.
Assessment criteria - excellent (5) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)
The student knows the phenomena affecting the strength of a structure under fatigue load and is able to calculate the life of the structure by calculation.
