Finnish Language and Communication Skills (5 cr)

Objectives (course unit)

After successful completion of the course students will understand the importance of communication skills especially in working life and know how to change their own ways to communicate depending on the situation and receivers. They also understand the importance of developing their own intercultural competence. They are able to evaluate their communication skills and willing to tap feedback to develop them further as a part of their professional development. They are also able to give developing feedback to the others. They can act in objective-oriented way in professional situations communicating as an expert in a structured, understandable and convincing way using appropriate argumentation remembering responsibility and obeying given guidelines in their language as well as a given timetable. They are able to gain and use information concerning their own branch in a critical point of view. They can make a both written and oral presentations for different kind of audiences added with a visual demonstration if needed. They will also be able to write their thesis reports and other reports as well as bulletins using given guidelines in the structure and style of their report and their language They prepare to face working life group communication situations and understand their responsibility to create a good atmosphere.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

A student can write comprehensible and formal documents and reports having a rough idea of standards. Structures of the texts are unclear and forms and styles of the language earn much comments. A level of argumentation is low. A student is able to give her/his oral presentation with visual demonstration formally, even if there are a lot of things to comment in its duration, structure, interaction or voice.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

Student’s written communication is structural and demonstrational. It is easy to catch the essential information of texts, which language is quite correct and faithful to the document or report standard. Student is able to present gained information from sources so that the summarizing separates clearly from her/his own ideas but combining these two parts natural way. In her/his speech communication student takes into consideration an audience and a situation and can form a functional structure to it. During a speech student has an eye contact with an audience and speaks mainly by heart. Student completes all tasks in timetable, is active and gives strong arguments for her/his opinions. Her/his assignments have functional structures and fit a situation and an audience.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

Student’s both written and oral communication is convincing, and she/he is able to present versatile arguments to her/his opinions. The essential information of her/his text has been structured and summarized properly. She/he uses correct language and controlled style. Student can speak convincingly, enthusiasticly and interactively. Student performs naturally and appropriately and manages to maintain her/his audience’s interest during the whole presentation. Student can utilize voice devices. She/he attends contact lessons active and constructive way.

Assessment methods and criteria

Kurssi on tarkoitettu opiskelijoille, joiden äidinkieli on suomi. Koska sen aikana harjoitellaan taitoja, opiskelijoilla on 80 %:n läsnäolovelvollisuus. Jos 20 %:n poissaolo-osuus ylittyy, kurssi katsotaan keskeytyneeksi. Olennaista on hahmottaa omien viestintätaitojen taso kurssin alussa, asettaa selkeät tavoitteet niiden parantamiseksi lukukauden aikana ja pyrkiä noita tavoitteita kohti. Paitsi itse- myös vertaisarvioinnin taitoja kehitetään. Tärkeää on myös oivaltaa, että kukin osaltaan vaikuttaa hyvän ilmapiirin luomiseen ryhmässä. Se on osaltaan ammatillisia ryhmäviestintätaitoja, joiden kehittämiseen kiinnitetään huomiota. Koska aikataulujen noudattaminen on ammattiviestinnässä olennaisen tärkeää, painotetaan harjoitusten kattavaa tekemistä ajallaan.
Koko ryhmän koostumus antaa hyvän mahdollisuuden oppia toimimaan monikulttuurisessa ympäristössä.
Arvosanasta 50 % määräytyy tutkielmaraportista saadun numeron perusteella ja 50 % esittelevästä puheesta saadun numeron perusteella.
Jos opiskelijalla on ollut lukiossa suomi toisena kielenä, tutkielmaraporttitehtävä muokataan hänen taitotasolleen sopivaksi. Kurssille voi osallistua myös opiskelija, joka osoittaa suomen kielen taitonsa Finnish for Foreigners -kurssia varten ja näin saa myös arvosanan suorituksistaan FfF-kurssille. Hän tekee tutkielmaraportin sijaan omalle suomen kielen tasolleen sopivan kirjoitustehtävän.

Teaching methods

Hyödynnetään verkkototeutukselle sopivia, mahdollisimman monipuolisia menetelmiä. Oppitunneilla puhutaan paljon: keskustellaan, pidetään puheita ja hiotaan ryhmätyötaitoja. Harjaannutetaan itse- ja vertaisrvioinnin taitoja. Oppituntien ulkopuolelle jää huomattava määrä tiedonhankintaa ja suunnittelu- sekä kirjoitustyötä. Kurssin alussa asetetaan henkilökohtaiset tavoitteet, joita kohti pyritään ja joiden toteutumista arvioidaan kurssin päättyessä.

Opettajan laatima materiaali ja muu kurssi-Tabulaan linkitetty tai muuten liitetty materiaali, esim. TAMKin Kirjallisen raportoinnin opas. Lisäksi on omaksi hyödyksi hyvä etsiä kirjastosta/netistä puheviestintään liittyvää kirjallisuutta/videoita. Erilaisia hyödyllisiä self help -julkaisuja on alalla tarjolla runsaasti.

Student workload

On hyvä hahmottaa, että kurssiin sisältyy huomattavan paljon itsenäistä työtä. Se on mitoitettu 5 op:n laajuiseksi, ja lähiopetusta on kahdessa periodissa vain kolme tuntia viikossa, eli kaiken kaikkiaan lähiopetusta on vain 27 tuntia. Koska 5 op:n työmäärä on opiskelijalla (5 x 27 t =) 135 t, se tarkoittaa, että itsenäistä työtä oppituntien ulkopuolella tulee tehdä 99 tunnin verran. Siksi aikataulussa pysymiseen tulee kiinnittää erityistä huomiota. Suurin itsenäinen työ on tutkielmaraportin laatiminen.

Content scheduling

Aluksi tutustutaan kurssiin ja porukkaan, sitten keskitytään enemmän kirjoittamisasioihin ja tiedonhankintaan, sitten puheeseen ja työskennellään ryhmissä. Ideana on saada raporttityö alta pois, ennen kuin muiden kurssien laajahkot kirjoitustyöt on palautettava.
