Osaamistavoitteet (Opintojakso)
After completing this course student:
- understands the basic laws, concepts and processes of chemistry
- can calculate, write and balance chemical equations
- knows how to handle safely the chemicals and wastes in the laboratory
- knows how to use a range of laboratory equipments and is familiar with the steps of chemical analysis.

Chemical equilibrium, acids and bases, redox reactions, chemical law, acts, decrees, chemical equipments, basic qualitative and quantitative methods with use in analysis of environmental samples

Two partial exams: one in the middle and the second at the end of the course. Retakes will be agreed later.
Arviointimenetelmät ja arvioinnin perusteet
Grading scale is 0-5. The course grade will form according to the points collected as follows:
1. short assignments, containing the home exercises which are given weekly: max. 20 points
2. laboratory exercises and related reporting: max.30 points
3.Exam ( given in two parts): max. 30 +20 = 50 points
Grading: grade 0: 0-29 points; grade 1: 30-44 points; grade 2: 45-59 points; grade 3:60-74 points; grade 4: 75-89 points; grade 5: 90-100 points.

•to understand the phenomena that determine the structures of liquids and solids
•to understand the fundamentals of chemical equilibrium, acids and bases and buffers
•to solve problems related to gas laws, solubility, pH
•to calculate the oxidation numbers and identify the oxidizing and reducing compounds in a redox reaction
•to understand the fundamentals of qualitative, quantitative and instrumental analysis

Student participated in the exam and laboratory exercises.
Overall the achieved competence is sufficient but narrow.
Student shows throughout the course (assignments, classroom discussions,laboratory exercises and exam) that:
-is familiar with the basic concepts and phenomena related to the subjects discussed during the course:structure of matter, gases, equilibrium, acids , bases and buffers, redox processes, radioactivity.
-can solve model exercise correcctly
-has the basic skills in water sampling and is able to perform the analysis of water samples under supervision
-has basic skills in reporting the results of the analysis

-the reporting of the the results of the analysis shows that the student can apply the theoretical knowledge in explaining the results
