Osaamistavoitteet (Opintojakso)

The student
- is able to implement a patient's intravenous fluid therapy safely;
- is able to add aseptically and correctly calculated medication to intravenous infusion;
- is able to responsibly insert intravenous cannula under supervision;
- is able to guide patients with issues concerning fluid therapy and blood transfusions.

- preparation of infusions and adding the medication
- inserting peripheral cannula, implementing the fluid therapy and blood transfusion

Prerequisite: Infection prevention in nursing and intravenous fluid therapy and blood transfusion

The student will have to demonstrate the skills during the course.

100% participation during the course.
Active participation during the contact lessons.
Compulsory preparatory work/assignments before the contact lessons.
The student will show competence in following areas, and plan the critera for the topics:
manages to prepare an IV fluid infusion/injection successfully according to the protocols
manages to perform IV cannulation successfully

Opiskelijan ajankäyttö ja kuormitus

1 ECTS = 27 hours of student's work: 3 contact meetings, practical training, 3x4 hours, and student's independent study.

Sisällön jaksotus

Content and objectives of the course:
the student masters aseptic and safe working manners at all times during practices and when handling the equipment.
the student masters clinical calculations required during the administration of intravenous fluids and medication
the student will be able to prepare an IV infusion set with aseptic and safety manners
the student will be able to prepare IV fluids for intravenous infusion with aseptic and safety manners
the student will be able to prepare intravenous medication infusion/injection with aseptic and safety manners
the student will be able to perform a peripheral cannulation with aseptic and safety manners
the student will be able to give guidance to the patient in relation to intravenous fluid and medication administration

The student has actively participated during the course and completed the given assignments in the given time frame.

The student has not actively participated during the course and completed the given assignments in the given time frame.
The student fails to prepare an IV fluid infusionsuccessfully according to the protocols
