Objectives (course unit)

The student is familiar with the theoretical basis of the finite element method and can analyze structures and machine parts under static loading conditions using a typical FEM-program. The student will master the basic concepts of the finite element method, will know the most important element types, is able to utilize the results of FEM-analysis and will know the structure of a typical FEM-program. The student is familiar with the theory of the direct finite element method of trusses and frames and gets practice in applying the finite element method to two- and three-dimensional solid bodies.

Content (course unit)

Basic concepts of the finite element method, element types and results of the FEM-analysis. The structure of a typical FEM-program and its line of action. The direct finite element method of trusses and frames. Using a FEM-program in practice.

Prerequisites (course unit)

Prerequisites: The student knows the principles of statics and strength of materials and is familiar with the basics of the theory of elasticity.
