Objectives (course unit)
Students
- are able to collect representative bacteriological samples safely and reliably
- are able to supervise other people in collecting the samples
- know preanalytical demands and clinical meaning of bacteriological samples
- are able to consider and ensure validity of bacteriological samples
- know devices, equipment, and analysis methods used in bacteriology
- are able to perform reliable basic bacteriology analyses and understand fundamentals of their operation
- can maintain and promote safe working methods in bacteriology
- know microbes, infections, prevention and care of infectious diseases and are able to integrate this knowledge in evaluating and reporting of results
- know the most common antimicrobics, and their influence and resistance mechanisms
- know the reporting and registration practice of infectious diseases
- implement and promote quality assurance in clinical microbiology
- are interested in developing their competence
Content (course unit)
Research process in bacteriological laboratory, devices, equipment, and analysis methods
Collection and preanalytics of bacteriological samples
Identification methods of bacteria and their selection
Safety and quality assurance in bacteriology
Reporting and registration of infectious diseases
Clinical meaning of bacteriological findings
Antimicrobics, their influence and resistance mechanisms
Prerequisites (course unit)
The student must have passed 7B00BC26 Orientation to Clinical Microbiology before the course 7B00BC27 Bacteriology.

The course includes clinical training in the university of applied sciences' teaching laboratory.
