Objectives (course unit)

The course covers the key concepts, principles and rules of the European Union law. In addition, issues relating to international treaties, international private law, and comparative law are dealt with during the course.

Students
- know the historical development phases of the European integration and union
- know the main concepts, principles and rules of the European Union law
- know the EU institutions and their working methods, and understand the meaning of EU citizenship
- know the competence distribution between EU and the member states
- understand the sources of law in EU and means of legal protection
- know how the European Union law affects Finnish law
- know how international conventions affect Finnish law
- know the basics of private international law and comparative law

- What are the historical development phases of the European integration and European Union?
- What do EU law and EU citizenship mean?
- What are the most important EU institutions and their tasks?
- How is competence shared between EU and the member states?
- How is EU law put into effect?
- What are the legal remedies in order to assure fulfilment of the EU law?
- How does EU law affect Finnish law?
- How do international conventions affect Finnish law?
- What do private international law and comparative law mean?
