Osaamistavoitteet (Opintojakso)
This course introduces and provides its students with hands-on experience of applying several selected Strategic Management Accounting theories and frameworks to practice. Case-based approach is applied all through the course.
After completing the course, the students will be able to:
Realize the current performance status and development potential of a business control function case by case.
Apply the basic strategic management accounting frameworks – like the Performance Pyramid, the Performance Prism, The Balanced Scorecard and/or The Economic Value Added (EVA®) – into practice.
Identify situations in which there is potential to utilize the BI approach to benefit the company and its strategy execution.
Collect, analyze, and efficiently report and communicate relevant information for decision making, using frameworks and supporting tools such as PEST, SWOT, Porter’s Five Forces, Risk Chart, Competitor Analysis and Stakeholder Analysis.
Analyze and evaluate the benefits and costs of using ERP in business control duties as well as in the further development of business processes and reporting of the whole company.
Consider and analyze the risks and opportunities of starting to use formal business control practices over the company borders, in company networks.
Use the English language in a professional manner in the fields of Strategic Management Accounting and business control.

How can the Strategic Management Accounting theories and frameworks be applied in practice?
Which contribution can the Business Intelligence (BI) concept and approach produce for decision making?
What are the roles of industry analysis and forecasting in modern business control?
How can a business controller turn external and internal data into essential information for future-oriented decision making?
How can information be collected and communicated efficiently, to make successful corporate decision making and strategy execution possible?
What benefits are targeted by using Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) in business management and control?
What opportunities, barriers and proposed benefits are there in implementing formal business control practices in company networks?

The exam will be there on Thursday Feb 18, 2016, if not otherwise decided together with students during the first lessons.
Two retake exams during the spring; detailed information of them will be visible in TenttiWilho retake system (through TAMK Intra, or PAKKI) in February.
Arviointimenetelmät ja arvioinnin perusteet
The course grade will be based on the exam (weight of 50-60 %) and the overall activity (weight of 40-50 %). Performing all the required assignments and exercises acceptably and/or very well has a key role in the evaluation of overall activity.

Opiskelijan ajankäyttö ja kuormitus
Total workload is defined as max. 130 hours. This includes some 30 hours of contact teaching. In addition to that, there might be need for some additional working/studying hours because of e.g. company visits.
Sisällön jaksotus
To start with in January and early February the focus is clearly on studies of business control and performance management. In February there'll be more focus on business intelligence and other advanced topics of management accounting.
