Objectives (course unit)
The student
-is under supervision able to assess the need for care, plan, implement and evaluate nursing during pregnancy and postpartum period, gynaecological disorders, and nursing of the family and children utilising evidence based knowledge
-recognises and is able to bring up matters and challenges concerning sexuality and reproductive health with the client during her life span
-knows how to support the family’s needs, strengths and support networks and their growth in parenthood and bringing up children recognising the risk factors
-knows how to support and guide expecting families and families with children to a healthy lifestyle and to avoid substance abuse
-recognises the most common disorders in pregnancy, postpartum recovery, gynaecology and knows how to guide the patient to the needed care
-knows the most common paediatric diseases and basics of medication and IV fluid therapy
Content (course unit)
women as gynaecological patients throughout their life span
-the nurse in promoting sexual health and supporting relationships and parenthood
-medication in gynaecology, pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum period
-pregnancy and postpartum period and related disorders and guidance, care and follow up during pregnancy and postpartum period
-healthy lifestyle and avoidance of substance abuse during pregnancy and breast feeding
-nursing of postpartum period, newborns and families
-growth, development, upbringing and daily care of healthy children
-children’s rights and principles of paediatric nursing
-interaction, communication, guidance and play with children in families
-paediatric nursing and the most common disorders
-basics of nursing children with special needs
-basics of children’s medication, IV fluid therapy and pain management throughout different ages
-recognition of child abuse and early interventions
Prerequisites (course unit)
50 ects of first year studies completed, including pharmacotherapy and medical calculations

Part 1: Maternity care, gynaecological nursing and obstetrics
- Written exam, numerical evaluation (0-5), passed assignments, participation in the lectures strongly advised.
Part 2: Maternity care, gynaecological nursing and obstetrics medical calculation

Part 3: Pediatric nursing
- Written exam, numeric evaluation (0-5), passed assignments, participation in the lectures strongly advised.
Part 4: Pediatric nursing and pediatrics medical calculation

Part 5 and 6: Independent studies, PBL small group work
- passed/failed assignments
- Problem based learning - group work. 100% participation is required, and active participation and written assignments are included in the evaluation self-evaluation and peer evaluation regarding knowledge of the substance. Completing a poster and participation in the poster presentation.
Part 7: Pediatrics

Student workload
Women, Families and Children as Nursing Clients is 8 ECTS, which means 216 hours of student's work.
Maternity care, gynaecological nursing and obstetrics 4 ECTS: is 108 hours which includes participation in lessons and independent studies (theory 32h, 2h exam, 11h for small group work, 10h for independent studies and 68h to read the course material).
Maternity care skills stations 1 ECT include 12h of contact lessons and 15h of independent work -these hours are allocated for reading the course material)
Pediatric nursing and pediatrics 4 ECTS is 108 hours which includes participation in lessons and independent studies (theory 32h, 2h exam, 21h for independent studies and 68h to read the course material).

Further information
Both Maternity care, gynaecological nursing and obstetrics and also Pediatric nursing and pediatrics require participation in the first lessons.
The module 7K00BK19 consists of 4 ECTS of Maternity care, gynaecological nursing and obstetrics and 4 ECTS of Pediatric nursing and pediatrics. Medical calculations and small group work are as part of the content of the module.

Part 5 PBL small group work maternity- and gynaecological nursing, include 2 triggers, one of the triggers includes testing a learning game.
Part 6 PBL small group work pediatric nursing 2 triggers and making a poster "The support of the development and growth of a healthy child" for a poster presentation.
Part 7 Pediatrics: completion requires passing the exam based fully on literature
