Objectives (course unit)

The student
-is able to act according to the principles of mental health promotion and preventive nursing in mental health / substance abuse issues in diverse health care sectors;
-is able to communicate professionally with clients and families suffering from mental health and/or substance abuse problems in diverse life situations and with diverse cultural backgrounds;
-identifies the signs and symptoms caused by mental health and substance abuse problems in different age groups and raises these issues when appropriate;
-is able to assess care in collaboration with the client and his/her family or significant others;
-is able to evaluate, based on assessment of care, the need for special services in collaboration with other professionals;
-is able to identify the life situation of children with parents suffering from mental illness or substance abuse;
-is able to plan, implement and evaluate mental health and substance abuse nursing in primary health care;
-is able to act in collaboration with people suffering from mental health and substance abuse problems, their significant others and professionals;
-is able to use evidence-based practice is his/her work;
-is able to reflect on professional use of his/her own personality and recognise his/her developmental challenges.

50 ects of first year studies completed, including pharmacotherapy and medical calculations

Exam schedules

19.9.14 and two times in retake days during the same academic year.Psychopharmacology test will be open in Tabula weeks 35-36.Test is based on book: Huttunen, M.O. 2006 tai uudempi painos: Lääkkeet mielen hoidossa. Duodecim.

Student knows principles of mental health and substance abuse problems prevention
Student can identify basic principles of mental health and substance abuse problems and nursing care methods used in primary care services
Student knows what is motivating approach
Student knows the meaning of using and developing own professional personality
Student knows the principals of rehabilitative nursing care
Part 2 Psychiatry:
Student can identify basic principles of psychiatric diagnosis and medicine cures
Part 3 Psychopharmacology:
Pass
Student achieve pass degree in Tabula test (20/25)
Failed
Student doesn't chieve pass degree in Tabula test (20/25)
Part 4 Part 4 Small group work:

Student's active participation in group work

Student knows how to bring up mental health and substance abuse problems and knows how to evaluate need of care
Student knows how to adapt knowledge of mental health and substance abuse problems
Student knows how to adapt nursing care methods used in primary care services
Student knows how to adapt principals of rehabilitative nursing care
Part 2 Psychiatry:
Student can identify basic principles of psychiatric diagnosis and medicine cures evaluated in primary care

Assessment criteria - excellent (5) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)

Part 1 Mental health nursing:
Student knows how to evaluate clients's need of care based on symptoms degree of difficulty and client's recourses and also notice client's family
Part 2 Psychiatry:
Student knows basic principles of psychiatric medication
Student can identify basic principles of psychiatric and substance abuse diagnosis and those cure
