Advanced Tribology is a cross-disciplinary course that focuses on theories of friction, wear, contact and lubrication, approaches to model basic tribological machine elements and methods to simulate basic tribological processes. In this course, the general description of the tribological concepts such as friction, wear, lubrication, surface texture and bearing materials is also included. The course follows with a detailed explanation of the lubricant regimes, the Reynold equation and the corresponding bearing design and applications. The student will study the fundamentals of mating surface contact, friction theories, various wear modes and lubrication regimes. The student will also study engineering problems related to friction, wear and lubrication and learn essential skills for tribology-related failure analyses. The main goal of this course is to provide fundamental knowledge and crucial skills in tribology to meet the requirements and needs of the industry. Upon completion of the course, each student will be able to identify and interpret the main lubrication mechanisms and to use the tribology-related theories on real industry-based practical applications.
