Objective of course:
The student:
-is able to apply her/his theoretical knowledge and skills to individualised holistic care of medical-surgical patients
-strenghthens her/his professional identity and competence in medical-surgical nursing
-outlines the ethical and theoretical foundations of nursing and is able to make ethically sound decisions
-is able to function as a primary nurse in individualised medical-surgical nursing
-is able to coordinate nursing in work communities and work responsibly in cooperation with diverse professional groups
-knows the role of evidence based nursing and knows the principles of quality assessment and development of nursing

Course contents:
-to support patients and their families in crises caused by acute illnesses
-to observe and support vital functions
-definition of the need for nursing and planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing in medical-surgical illnesses
-to manage the medication of medical-surgical patients
-to support patients and their families in coping with chronic health problems
-to promote rehabilitation and self-care of patients and their families in individual situations in life
-patients´ legal rights, values, principles and norms of nursing and their follow-up in nursing
-research, development and quality of nursing, evidence-based nursing

Teaching methods:
Lectures, tutorials, study circles, seminar, orientation to clinical training, study visits, independent study, supervised clinical training

Assessment methods:
written examinations, practical examinations, self-evaluation, peer review, evaluation given by teacher and supervisor
