Objective of course
Students understand and are able to reflect the concepts of mental health, health and well-being
They understand the significance of promotion and preventive mental health work in the individual, the family, and the community level as well as the im-portance of care and rehabilitation. Students are able to meet different people in various life crises, to give individual support and help to patient and their significant others. They are able to apply the principles of nurse - patient relationship in the care of mental health patient and families. They are able to participate in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the patient care in an interdisciplinary team in different mental health services. Students understand the significance of work counseling in psychiatric nursing. They know the mental health and substance abuse service system and legisla-tion.
Students learn to understand the social dimension of mental health and illness from theoretical and practical points of view. They learn the basic mod-els of abnormality their importance for curative, preventive and promotive practices in mental health work. Students get familiar with mental health services from point of view of social and health care. They understand how social problems and health problems are linked together.
Course contents:
G219A-8 Mental health nursing, 4 ECTS
Falling ill as crisis and basics of crisis intervention
Mental health and mental health problems
Psychological defense mechanisms, key views on personality
Psychiatric diagnostics and psychiatry as special field of medicine, key mental health problems
Encountering persons with depression and /or sui-cidality
Encountering persons with substance abuse prob-lems and basics of substance abuse care
Legislation on alcohol and national alcohol pro-gram
Service system for people suffering from substance abuse
Psychotic experiences and encountering patients with psychotic symptoms
Care and rehabilitation of people suffering from schizophrenia
Encountering patients with personality disorders
Forms of psychotherapy
Problem-solving approach
Child welfare and child welfare law
Referral systems in mental health and substance abuse services
Professional relationship with people suffering from mental health and /or substance abuse problems
G219B-8 Supervised clinical training, 6 ECTS
Students participate actively in the care of the cli-ents / patients under supervision.
