Objectives

The course forms the basis for textile studies and gives grounds for professional development. The course is also aimed at students who are interested in different types of textiles and their cross-disciplinary usage outside the traditional use of textiles. The students know the textile industry in Finland and the international division of work. The students know the main textile production processes from fibre to the finished product. The students know the most common textile fibres and their characteristics, textile structures and the assembly methods of textile products. The students know the basics structures and markings of textures, knits, non-woven fabrics and yarns. The students learn about the data sources of the field and are able to use them.

Content

Finnish textile industry and international textile trade. The most common textile fibres, yarn structures and their characteristics. Level structures, marking methods, production methods and their usages. Technical use of textiles (for example filters, composite and paper machine textiles). Assembling a textile product by using different methods. Recognising textile materials. The students familiarise themselves with the textile machines and testing equipment and recognise different textiles. The services of TAMK library. Company visitations to nearby textile companies.
