Objectives

The students know the types of wood and the differences between fibres in making pulp. The students know the chemical pulp production, unit processes of a fibre line and the recovery of chemicals. The students know the bleaching of the pulp and the production of by-products. The students know how to control the process and the quality of the products. The students know the environmental effects of pulp production as well as its control and cost structure. The course strengthens the students’ professional development.

Content

Coniferous and deciduous trees: pine, spruce, birch, aspen, poplar, eucalyptus and wattle. Other fibres used in pulp production: straw and reed fibres. Coniferous and deciduous sulphate pulps and their difference. Unit processed of the fibre line and the control of the process and quality: rossing and chipping, steaming the chip, impregnation of chemicals, cooking, washing, oxidation, bleaching and drying. Production of semi-chemical pulp. Recovery of chemicals and energy production. Refining air and water. By-products: turpentine, biodisel and other bio-products.
