Objectives

The students learn the basics of microbiology and biochemistry and understand their significance for the environment and in the field of technology. The students are able to apply their knowledge in solving practical problems. The students understand the significance and possibilities for intentional use of microbes. The students learn how to prevent or minimize the ill effects of microbes.

Content

The structure and vital functions of micro-organism cells. The genetic characteristics of microbes, beneficial and ill effects. Aseptic working. Simple microbe definition methods and sample taking methods. Basic structure of biomolecules and how they work in a cell. The transfer of genetic information. Functions and regulating of enzymes. Basics of metabolism.

Prerequisites

Organic Chemistry and Laboratory Work (PTK-401) or equivalent.
