Objectives
Students learn to understand the fundamentals of Newtonian mechanics. They can draw the Free-Body Diagrams of a particle and rigid body. The students can determine reaction forces using equilibrium conditions in two dimensions. They understand external and internal effects of beams and can draw normal force, shear force and bending-moment diagrams.
Content
The basic concepts and rules of mechanics; force vectors, Newton's laws, SI units. Two-dimensional force systems; components of a force, moment, couple, resul-tants. Equilibrium in two dimensions; free body diagrams, equilibrium conditions and equations, adequacy of constraints. External and internal effects of a beam. Determining force and moment diagrams.
