Objectives

This course covers the manufacturing, properties, and applications of nonwoven fabrics and sustainability considerations
After completing the course, the student is able to
• describe the different manufacturing methods, properties and uses of nonwovens
• understand sustainability and circular economy aspects related to nonwovens
• can explain the quality requirements of the end product and is able to make suitable choices concerning the raw material, manufacturing and finishing methods

Content

Definition of nonwovens; Production processes: laying, bonding, finishing; Structure and properties of nonwovens; Applications of nonwovens; Quality testing standards of nonwovens; Nonwovens industry; Sustainability and circular economy in nonwoven industry

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Knowing: The student is able to define nonwovens and their most common manufacturing processes and is able to name the applications of nonwovens.
Acting: The student is able to solve simple problems that are comparable to the tasks covered in the course.
Being: The student takes responsibility for his or her own performance.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

Knowing: The student is able to explain the manufacturing processes of nonwovens and their properties and is able to compare the quality and use of different nonwovens in different applications.
Acting: The student is able to apply his / her knowledge and perform basic and more demanding tasks.
Being: The student takes responsibility for his / her performance and commits not only to his / her own activities but also to the activities of the group.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Knowing: The student has a comprehensive understanding of the most important nonwovens and their manufacturing processes and is able to evaluate and apply their use in different processes and applications.
Acting: The student is able to solve challenging and applied tasks. The student is able to look for different solution options and justify his / her choice
Being: The student is able to cooperate responsibly, flexibly and constructively.
