Objectives

The student
• masters theoretical foundations of evidence based practice
• critically evaluates and develop clinical practices and teamwork according to evidence based practice principles
• masters mental health needs assessment in cooperation with client and his/her network
• masters realization of nursing process in close co-operation with client
• critically evaluates and develops clinical practices to support clients interests and ethical sustainability

Content

• Evidence based practice in mental health and substance abuse nursing
• Holistic needs assessment of client in co-operation with the client and his/her network
• Shared desicion making and nursing process with client
• Ethical desicion making
• Clinical practices related to advocacy

Prerequisites

Obligatory previous studies: Dialogical collaboration 5 ECTS

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student
• is able to search for information on the subject and is able to use national and international sources
• is able to apply the collected information at a descriptive level when reviewing current practices and means of action
• does not display a critical evaluation of the topic
• participates in the course inconsistently.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student
• is able to seek evidence-based knowledge from both national and international sources, and is able evaluate the sources critically
• is able to construct both analyses and syntheses of the topic
• is able to use the acquired knowledge in critical evaluation and development of current practices
• generally participates in the course actively and professionally.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student
• is able to retrieve evidence-based knowledge from a number of national and international sources of information, critically evaluate the studies and synthesise the collected data
• shows a profound command of the subject
• is able to evaluate current practices critically and is able to create new evidence-based practices
• participates in the course actively and professionally.

Further information

Turku University of Applied Sciences is responsible organiser of this course. According to the contract between the five UAS students in the Master studies on mental health and substance abuse as well as "path students" in these studies are eligible to participate to this course.
Intensive days will be held in Turku. Turku AMK is responsible for teaching.
