Objectives

The student is able to
- calculate and analyse single and three phase alternating electric circuits
- describe the working principles of a transformer
- determine electrotechnical quantities forming the basis of the compensation of an electric network
- use waveform analysis in electrical engineering
- carry out and analyse basic quantities used in electrical engineering

Content

The concepts, components, calculation and analysing methods of alternating circuits. Polyphase systems. Resonant and filter circuits. Fourier series. Mutual inductance. Basic measurements in electrical engineering.

Prerequisites

Electrical Circuits 1 (5T00BE00) and the Basic Skills of Engineering module

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student identifies the components of electrical engineering and their properties in DC and AC circuits. The student knows the basics of single and three phase alternating electricity. The student is able to use vector calculation and network analysis technology to determine the characteristics of a simple alternating current circuit. The student is able to calculate the actual, reactive and apparent power of a three-phase load. The student knows the basics of change phenomena and resonances in the electric network.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

In addition to the above, the student is able to apply different methods to the analysis of AC circuits. The student is able to use pointer counting in 1-phase and 3-phase AC circuits. The student is able to determine the power of a component connected to a three-phase electrical circuit and to justify the practical meanings of the active, reactive and virtual power components. The student is able to describe the operation of a transformer and solve simple mutual inductance problems.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the above, the student can apply various methods for the analysis of alternating current circuits. The student is able to determine the power of a three-phase circuit both computationally and based on measurement. The student understands the principles alternating and resonance of AC circuits and their means of control.
