The degree title of the master’s degree programme is Master of Culture and Arts. The extent of the degree is 60 credits and it takes a year to complete the degree.
KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES
Graduates have the abilities to work in demanding expert and development tasks in the field of music.
Graduates have an up-to-date, extensive and deep music pedagogy expertise for working life needs and music teacherhood.
Based on their choice, students have developed their competence in an instrument, voice, choral conducting, music theory, music writing, music technology, or event production. Students have deepened their prior competence or extended it to new fields.
Students can direct their competence through free-choice studies based on their development project or professional needs.
In their master’s thesis students focus on innovative application of their practical artistic, pedagogical or research and development competence.
KEY CONTENTS AND OCCUPATIONAL PROFILES
The basis for the degree programme are working life changes in the field of music. Graduates can work in diverse teaching, management and development tasks at different levels of music education. Graduates can also work as musicians or independent entrepreneurs.
The key contents are:
Developing music competence
1-2 competence fields from the following based on the student’s choice:
- instrument competence
- choral conducting
- music theory
- music writing
- music technology
- event production
Developing teaching and leadership skills
- developing music teacherhood
- music pedagogy in vocational and higher education
- current fields of music pedagogy
- use of information and communication technology in music education
- music pedagogy management and development competence
It is also possible to include studies from TAMK’s other degree programmes or other higher education institutions into the free-choice studies.
The master’s thesis can focus on artistic or pedagogical competence or applied research and development competence.
International student and teacher exchanges, such as master’s courses, support the high level of the degree programme.
TAMK’s piano pedagogy laboratory is a special learning environment related to R&D&I and internationality.
Functioning working life connections, cooperation within TAMK’s School of Art, Music and Media, as well as internationality diversify the degree programme.

MODE OF STUDY
The Master’s Degree Programme in Music focuses on theory-based practical learning and skills practice. Some courses involve individual instruction, which characterises the education internationally. A significant part of the studies is implemented in small or large groups, or by working as a member of musical ensembles, such as a symphony orchestra or choir. The degree programme includes contact teaching, independent work, distance learning, working life projects, and possibly online studies.

Curriculum development and working life cooperation
The curriculum complies with the European and national qualifications frameworks (NQF and EQF, level 7).
Tampere University of Applied Sciences’ Degree Programmes in Music and Tampere Conservatoire cooperate closely. Tampere Music Academy is the emblem of the cooperation. It develops and implements e.g. productions and concerts.
Tampere Music Academy has an advisory council for working life cooperation in the field of music. Working life cooperation is also made through projects, teachers’ artistic activities, part-time teachers who work as professional musicians, and the pedagogical network of the degree programme.
The advisory council’s, working life representatives’ and students’ views have been considered in curriculum development.
