STUDY FIELD AND APPROACH

Emerging Media includes media forms and technologies that are at such an early phase that media professionals are still exploring and experimenting with them. In the constantly changing media environment, there is a need for art and media experts who are able to rapidly adopt new technologies. Furthermore, the Master's degree in Emerging Media nurtures a holistic worldview and emphasizes the role of art and media in sustainable development.

Emerging Media entails forms, technologies and digital cultures such as
- evolving social media and mobile communications applications and platforms
- virtual and augmented reality
- applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence: e.g. media content personalization
- new collaborative production tools
- “old forms”, such as video, used in new ways

During the study programme, various fields of emerging media are discussed and analyzed. Based on their previous work experience and personal interests, students select at least one focus area in which to develop their skills. The application fields can be, for instance, music or media production, arts, communications, marketing, digital learning, virtual events and collaboration or the development of work practices.

The programme merges emerging media and sustainability, meaning the promotion of wellbeing and tackling of local and global challenges and, on an economic level, e.g. the consideration of business opportunities of emerging media. The studies combine research and practical work in a multidisciplinary way which encourages to look for ideas from different approaches and practices of media and art as well as other disciplines.

OCCUPATIONAL PROFILES

The occupational profiles of graduates are diverse depending on their prior professional experience and personal achievements during the studies. Graduates are qualified for leadership roles and demanding tasks in the area of art, media and innovation in creative industries and other industry sectors.

STRUCTURE OF STUDIES

The extent of the studies is 60 cr.

The most important study module is the master’s thesis, comprising half of the study credits (30 cr). The master’s thesis focuses on the execution and report of an innovative/artistic emerging media project. During the thesis process, students deepen their knowledge and skills of their chosen focus area. Students are required to acquire a commissioner or a cooperation partner for their thesis. Sustainability shall also be addressed in the thesis. The report is an academic study related to the practical emerging media project.

During the advanced professional studies (5 x 5 cr), students update their knowledge and acquire new know-how and skills in the field of emerging media. They explore and experiment how art and content creation are related to emerging media forms and technologies. They also study sustainable value creation from economic, environmental and social perspectives. Free-choice studies (5 cr) extend students’ knowledge and skills in a field that is relevant for their master’s project.

In the studies, self-directed learning is emphasized as the fundamental method for reaching the learning objectives. Therefore, students are actively guided throughout their studies to form their own learning objectives and to utilize the informal resources of the internet in an efficient way.

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES

This programme will enable the participants to:
- update their knowledge about emerging media and new technologies
- gain expertise on at least one focus area of emerging media (e.g. social media, virtual reality)
- develop an entrepreneurial attitude and self-learning skills to rapidly take a grip on changing media forms and technologies
- consider sustainability and societal challenges in their work
- apply a multidisciplinary approach to their work
- develop their skills in leading and managing multicultural teams
- carry out an innovative/artistic emerging media project
- research, analyze and critically reflect on topics and practices related to media studies

MODE OF STUDIES

The programme consists of two separate intensive weeks and online studies. A crucial part of the studies is to activate self-development that is nurtured by personal guidance consisting of online video meetings between a student and a supervisor. The intensive weeks arranged at TAMK's Mediapolis Campus are mandatory. In addition to the intensive weeks, the advanced professional studies contain individual and group tasks that are carried out online. The recommended duration of the studies is 1-1,5 yeasr. In this case, the student is expected to start the master’s thesis project in the early stages of the studies. The master’s thesis is an independent work demonstrating student’s capabilities in the required EQF 7 level.

Opetussuunnitelman kehittäminen ja työelämäyhteistyö

The curriculum stems from research and development projects in cooperation with working life in the field of new technologies. It is also based on research mapping the needs of future working life (e.g. reports of Nesta foundation and Finnish Ministry of Culture and Education). Working life cooperation is implemented e.g. through students' master theses.
