Objectives
The aim of this study module is to enhance the student's understanding of methods in the field of public health nursing to promote the health of children under school age.
Upon completing the study module, the student will be able to
• evaluate, support, and guide the health, growth, and development of children under school age
• support healthy and safe lifestyle choices within families, utilizing their own resources
• identify the specific needs of children and families, consult as necessary, and refer them for further examinations and treatment when required
• facilitate early interaction, parenthood, and the management of daily life for families
Content
• Child and family-centered nursing in child healthcare clinic
• Methods for monitoring and assessing child health.
• Health counseling for families with children.
• Early interaction and methods for supporting parenthood.
• Family health history and family background as a basis for child health.
Prerequisites
The student must have completed 135 ECTS credits of nursing studies and participated in the course Nursing Care for Children, Adolescents, and People with Disabilities and The Basics of Public Health Nursing.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
The student
• is able to examine the health of the child and family only from a limited perspective
• has a narrow understanding of lifestyle guidance and uses one-sided methods in lifestyle counseling
• can identify some special needs of families with children
• can use some screening methods for child growth and development
• possesses limited knowledge of early interaction and supporting parenthood and family life management
Assessment criteria, good (3-4)
The student
• can examine the health of a child and a family with children mainly in a diverse manner
• can support central health-promoting lifestyles of the family using a few methods
• can identify the most important special needs of a family with children and knows the principles of supporting and monitoring them
• can use screening methods for a child's growth and development
• has good knowledge of early interaction and supporting parenting and everyday family management
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student
• can comprehensively assess the health of a child and a family with children
• can support the family's healthy and safe lifestyles using a strengths-based approach, applying a variety of public health nursing methods
• can identify the special needs of the child and the family and has the skills to support, monitor, and provide follow-up care
• can use and apply a wide range of screening methods for a child's growth and development
• possesses a strong understanding of early interaction, supporting parenting, and family life management, and can apply them in a versatile manner
