Objectives

During the study module, the student enhances their competence in family health nursing for expectant and delivering families. The student gains the ability to work in family healthcare for expectant and delivering families.

Upon completing the study module, the student will be able to
• assess, plan, and implement the health and well-being of expectant, delivering families, and newborns during pregnancy and post-delivery
• identify, monitor, and evaluate risk factors related to pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum and refer for further treatment when necessary
• assess, support, and guide family interactions and resources
• implement family coaching
• apply theoretical knowledge to postpartum check-ups
• plan, evaluate, and provide breastfeeding guidance during pregnancy and post-delivery

Content

• Maternity care service system and multidisciplinary cooperation
• Maternal health check-ups, screening methods, treatment, and guidance during different stages of pregnancy and postpartum
• Fetal screening methods and genetic screenings
• High-risk pregnancies and criteria for referral to the maternity clinic
• Lifestyle counseling for expectant families during pregnancy and postpartum
• Supporting parenthood, relationships, and the psychological well-being of the family
• Content and methods of family coaching
• Stages of childbirth and pain relief
• Contraception after childbirth and postpartum check-ups

Prerequisites

The student should have completed 135 ECTS credits of nursing studies, as well as participation in the Basics of Public Health Nursing course. Participation in the Reproductive Health and Gynecological Nursing and Breastfeeding Counselling course during the nursing phase is also required.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

- The student identifies the multidisciplinary collaboration partners in maternity care and the service system.
- The student understands the importance of supporting the health and well-being of expectant and delivering families.
- The student knows the basics of the content and monitoring of health check-ups and care for pregnant women, delivering families, and newborns.
- The student recognizes common risk factors related to pregnancy and can guide the family to further care when necessary.
- The student understands the significance of the relationship, parenthood, and mental well-being during pregnancy and postpartum.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

- The student comprehends the multidisciplinary collaboration partners in maternity care and the service system.
- The student can support the health and well-being of expectant and delivering families.
- The student is proficient in the content and monitoring of health check-ups and care for pregnant women, delivering families, and newborns.
- The student identifies risk factors related to pregnancy and can guide the family to further care when needed.
- The student understands the importance of the relationship, parenthood, and mental well-being during pregnancy and postpartum.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

- The student has a comprehensive understanding of the multidisciplinary collaboration partners in maternity care and the service system. They can effectively apply their knowledge in their work.
- The student can assess, guide, and support the health and well-being of expectant and delivering families on an individual basis.
- The student is proficient in the content and monitoring of health check-ups and care for pregnant women, delivering families, and newborns. They can apply their knowledge in various situations.
- The student recognizes risk factors related to pregnancy and can guide the family to further care when necessary.
- The student understands the importance of the relationship, parenthood, and mental well-being during pregnancy and postpartum. They can individually and comprehensively consider the family's needs and effectively apply their knowledge.
