Objectives

During this course, students deepen their expertise in surgical nursing in the perioperative care environment.

After completing the course, the student

• Act professionally, ethically, and customer-centrically in surgical nursing.
• Communicate and work in a multidisciplinary team utilizing information technology.
• Document and implement patient and customer safety in surgical nursing.
• Understand the importance of leadership, employee expertise, entrepreneurship, development, and quality assurance in nursing.
• Understand the healthcare service system as part of patient care.
• Promote patient health in surgical nursing.
• Master patient guidance and self-care support in perioperative care.
• Implement clinical nursing.
• Implement evidence-based nursing and utilize research data in decision-making.

Content

Prerequisites

At the beginning of the Optional Professional Studies, the student must have completed 135 credits. These should include theoretical studies of the area which the student has chosen for the Optional Professional Studies, as well as courses in anatomy and physiology and minimum six supervised clinical training courses.

Participation in the course Operating Theater Nursing.

Assessment criteria, pass/fail

Pass:
The student
• Following nursing laws, ethical guidelines, principles, and occupational safety instructions.
• Acting responsibly as a team member and adhering to training instructions.
• Having the ability to address unprofessional conduct and adopting the nursing professional identity.
• Being able to assess and develop their own expertise, recognizing their own competence and limits, and being able to receive feedback.
• Valuing the patient and working customer-centrically.
• Being able to prepare for receiving patients in a perioperative environment.
• Facing vulnerable patient groups and individuals from different cultures individually.
• Interacting appropriately and respectfully with patients and members of the healthcare team, creating and maintaining a professional relationship with the patient.
• Working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Maintaining continuity of care both orally and in writing.
• Using the nursing process in documentation and applying it in nursing, as well as assessing the timeliness, consistency, and quality of the recorded information.
• Using healthcare information technology, electronic databases, and reporting tools.
• Promoting patient safety and preventing adverse events in all phases of patient care.
• Working in various roles in surgical nursing in the perioperative environment.
• Working cost-consciously, considering the environment and principles of sustainable development.

• Recognizing patients' health risk factors in surgical nursing.
• Meeting patient needs by planning, implementing, and evaluating appropriate and individual care in collaboration with other professionals.
• Mastering immediate preparations for surgery.
• Mastering the key knowledge and skills required in perioperative nursing care (e.g., patient skin disinfection or creating the sterile field).
• Collecting and analyzing information, making situational conclusions to ensure smooth patient care.
• Acting appropriately according to the situation.
• Mastering the handling of various samples taken from patients.
• Mastering the principles of infection prevention and acting aseptically.
• Safely implementing patient medication under supervision.

Fail:
The student
• Does not follow nursing laws, ethical guidelines, or principles, acts irresponsibly as a team member, or does not adhere to internship instructions, or behaves dishonestly (e.g., lacks goals or shifts, does not follow work hours, does not notify absences as agreed, or does not meet the required hours).
• Does not take responsibility for their own learning.
• Cannot assess and improve their own competence or accept feedback.
• Does not recognize their own competence or its limitations.
• Does not value the patient or act in a patient-centered manner.
• Does not know how to prepare for receiving a patient in the perioperative environment.
• Does not know how to deal with vulnerable patient groups in nursing or patients from different cultures individually.
• Cannot engage in professional or therapeutic interactions with clients/patients of different ages or backgrounds and cannot support them psychosocially.
• Cannot work as part of a multidisciplinary team and does not understand the significance of roles and responsibilities.
• Cannot maintain the continuity of care orally or in writing.
• Cannot assess the timeliness, consistency, or quality of recorded information.
• Cannot use healthcare information technology, electronic databases, or reporting tools.
• Cannot promote patient safety or prevent adverse events in all phases of the patient care process.
• Cannot work in different roles in surgical nursing in the perioperative environment.
• Cannot work cost-consciously, considering the environment or sustainability principles.
• Cannot prioritize their work tasks or manage their own actions.
• Does not want to guide or share information with other students or colleagues.
• Does not perform effectively in nursing and does not meet patient satisfaction in terms of their own actions.
• Does not understand the tasks of different operating and service units as part of the care and service chain or cannot use them in a timely manner in patient/client care.
• Cannot check the functionality and safety of the devices and equipment required in anesthesia nursing.
• Does not recognize the health risk factors of their patients in anesthesia nursing.
• Cannot meet the patient's needs by planning, implementing, or evaluating appropriate and individualized care in collaboration with other professionals in anesthesia nursing.
• Does not have control over the immediate preparations of the patient for surgery.
• Does not have the essential knowledge and skills required in perioperative nursing care (e.g., patient's skin disinfection or covering of the sterile area).
• Cannot gather and analyze information or make situational conclusions to facilitate the patient's smooth care.
• Does not have control over handling various patient samples.
• Does not operate appropriately in response to the situation's demands.
• Does not have control over the principles of infection prevention or does not act aseptically.
• Makes repeated errors in patient medication administration despite guidance and has not completed the medication administration pass.
• Cannot reliably search for or utilize essential scientific and evidence-based information or unit care recommendations in patient care.
• Cannot assess the consequences of their decision-making in patient care and team performance.
