Objectives

During the course, you will be able to deepen your competence in mental health and substance abuse nursing, especially from the perspective of children, adolescents, and families. You will also be prepared to deal with psychologically traumatized clients.

After completing the course, the student
• Knows the special characteristics of mental health and substance abuse nursing for children and adolescents and is able to carry out the assessment of the need for treatment.
• Manages the principles of therapeutic interaction with children and adolescents implemented in specialised mental health and substance abuse nursing services.
• Knows the importance of cooperation with families and is able to apply family nursing methods.
• Manages the principles of trauma care in mental health and substance abuse nursing and is able to apply trauma nursing methods.
• Knows the importance of reflection and supervision as part of well-being at work and the development and evaluation of one's own professional activities.
• Will be able to take into account the societal, communal and individual perspectives of mental health and substance abuse nursing in their own work.
• Is able to take sustainable development into account as part of mental health as a whole and their own activities.
• Is familiar with different approaches and psychotherapy methods in mental health and substance abuse nursing.

• Mental health and substance abuse nursing in specialised services for children and adolescents

• knows the key assessments and psychotherapy methods related to mental health and substance abuse disorders and is able to utilize the information obtained from them in a versatile way in planning the client's treatment

Prerequisites

At the beginning of the Optional Professional Studies, the student must have completed 135 credits. These should include theoretical studies of the area which the student has chosen for the Optional Professional Studies, as well as courses in anatomy and physiology and minimum six supervised clinical training courses.

The student

• Knows the principles of care relationship work implemented in specialised mental health and substance abuse nursing services for children and adolescents.
• Recognize the importance of cooperation with families and methods of family care.
• Knows the principles and methods of trauma treatment in mental health and substance abuse nursing.
• Recognizes the importance of reflection and supervision as part of well-being at work and the development and evaluation of one's own professional activities.
• Identify social, communal and individual perspectives in mental health and substance abuse nursing.
• Recognize sustainable development as part of mental health as a whole.
• Know about psychological assessments and psychotherapy methods related to mental health and substance abuse disorders.

The student

• Will be able to implement the principles of care relationship work implemented in specialised services for mental health and substance abuse nursing for children and adolescents.
• Knows the importance of cooperation with families and is able to implement family nursing methods.
• Knows the principles of trauma care and is able to use trauma nursing methods in mental health and substance abuse nursing.
• Knows the importance of reflection and supervision as part of well-being at work and the development and evaluation of one's own professional activities.
