Objectives
The aim of the study course is to deepen basic knowledge about long-term and neurologically ill child and family nursing.
After completing the course, the student
• Can apply theoretical knowledge and work at different stages of the care process for children and families with long-term and neurological conditions as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Knows and understands the theoretical and operational principles of drug and fluid therapy for children with long-term conditions.
• Takes responsibility for the professional development of his/her own competence in the care of children and families with long-term conditions.
Content
• The role of genetics and long-term and neurological conditions for children and families
• Multidisciplinary care in the most common long-term and neurological conditions of children
• Guidance and support for the child and family in long-term and neurological conditions and adherence to treatment
• Communication methods used in the care of children and young people
• Medication and fluid management in child and adolescent care
Prerequisites
At the beginning of the Optional Professional Studies, the student must have completed 135 credits. These should include theoretical studies of the area which the student has chosen for the Optional Professional studies, as well as courses in anatomy and physiology and minimum six supervised clinical training courses.
In each of the Optional Professional Studies for Nursing for Children and Young People as well as Perioperative Nursing, a maximum of 70 students can be selected annually. The student selection is carried out according to 9§ of the Degree Regulations. Selection is based on the average grades of courses other than elective studies. The selection process takes place according to a separate schedule in spring and autumn when students apply for Optional Professional Studies, at which point the academic achievements of applicants are reviewed.

The student
• • Knows the basics of ethical behavior related to his professional field in the care of a long-term and neurologically ill child and family.
• Understands the basic theoretical information and participates in the different stages of the treatment process in the care of a long-term and neurologically ill child and family as part of a multi-professional work group.
• Knows and is able to implement medication and fluid therapy safely and comprehensively for a child with long-term and neurological illnesses.
• Is responsible for the theoretical and functional development of his/her own skills in long-term and neurologically ill child and family care work.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4)
The student
• • Knows the basics of ethical behavior related to his professional field in the care of a long-term and neurologically ill child and family.
• Uses theoretical knowledge in the different phases of the treatment process in the care of a long-term and neurologically ill child and family and works actively as part of a multi-professional work group.
• Knows and is able to implement medication and fluid therapy safely and comprehensively for a child with long-term and neurological illnesses.
• Is active in the development of his own theoretical knowledge and activities in caring for a long-term and neurologically ill child and family.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student
• • Apply the principles of ethical activity related to their professional field in the nursing work of a long-term and neurologically ill child and family.
• Uses theoretical knowledge in a structured manner in the different phases of the treatment process in the care of a long-term and neurologically ill child and family and works as a member of a multi-professional work group.
• Knows and is able to implement medication and fluid therapy safely and comprehensively for a child with long-term and neurological illnesses.
• Is responsible for the development of his own theoretical and operational skills and the work community in long-term and neurologically ill child and family care work.
