Objectives
The objective of the study module is for the student to develop into an expert in perioperative nursing.
Upon completion of the study module, the student will:
• Be able to apply the principles of aseptic practice in perioperative care.
• Understand the responsible actions of Scrub Nurses' and Runners' work tasks in different specialties and phases of surgeries and procedures.
• Knows how to apply professional communication skills within the perioperative environment.
• Learn skills how to work as part of the perioperative team collegially and assess their own actions critically.
Content
• Aseptic practice in perioperative care.
• Information about various surgical procedures, techniques, and necessary instruments and medical devices.
• Understanding and applying the principles and practices of ethical and safety issues in perioperative care.
• Smooth teamwork as the foundation for safe operations, where the patient is in focus.
Prerequisites
At the beginning of the Optional Professional Studies, the student must have completed 135 credits. These should include theoretical studies of the area which the student has chosen for the Optional Professional studies, as well as courses in anatomy and physiology and minimum six supervised clinical training courses.
In each of the Optional Professional Studies for Nursing for Children and Young People as well as Perioperative Nursing, a maximum of 70 students can be selected annually. The student selection is carried out according to 9§ of the Degree Regulations. Selection is based on the average grades of courses other than elective studies. The selection process takes place according to a separate schedule in spring and autumn when students apply for Optional Professional Studies, at which point the academic achievements of applicants are reviewed.

The student:
• Recognizes various surgical procedures.
• Understands the significance of surgery in perioperative nursing.
• Recognizes the importance of patient safety in perioperative nursing.
• The planning and execution of perioperative care enable the correct patient positioning and immediate surgical preparations.
• The planning and execution of perioperative care are based on the application of aseptic principles at a general level.
• Understands the fundamentals of ethical conduct related to their profession.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4)
The student:
• Understands patient safety in the planning of perioperative care.
• Understands the significance of surgery in perioperative nursing.
• The planning and execution of perioperative care are based on the application of aseptic principles.
• Can apply the theoretical foundations of the Scrub Nurses' and Runners' work tasks in perioperative care.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student:
• Considers patient safety in the planning of perioperative care from the perspective of the specific patient case.
• Can apply the requirements of surgical procedures in a way that facilitates collaboration between medicine and nursing.
• The planning and execution of perioperative care are based on the application of aseptic principles.
• In the execution of perioperative care, theoretical foundations of the Scrub Nurses' and Runners' work tasks are applied, considering the actions of other healthcare professionals involved in patient care.
