Objectives

The student deepens their expertise in anesthesia nursing within the perioperative care environment.

After completing the course, the student
• Act professionally, ethically, and in a patient-centered manner in anesthesia nursing.
• Communicate and collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, utilizing information technology.
• Document and implement patient and client safety measures in anesthesia nursing.
• Understand the significance of leadership, workforce competence, entrepreneurship, development, and quality assurance in nursing.
• Recognize the healthcare system's role in patient care.
• Promote patient health in anesthesia nursing.
• Master patient guidance and self-care support in perioperative nursing.
• Implement clinical nursing practices with a focus on patient safety.

Content

• Comprehensive practice of anesthesia nursing for patients.
• Preparation in the role of an anesthesia nurse for clinical training.

Prerequisites

At the beginning of the Optional Professional Studies, the student must have completed 135 credits. These should include theoretical studies of the area which the student has chosen for the Optional Professional Studies, as well as courses in anatomy and physiology and minimum six supervised clinical training courses.

Participation in the course Anesthesia Nursing.

Assessment criteria, pass/fail

Pass:
The student
• Adheres to nursing laws, ethical guidelines, principles, and workplace safety instructions.
• Acts responsibly as a team member and follows guidance during practice.
• Is prepared to address unprofessional behavior and has embraced the nursing profession's identity.
• Can assess and develop their own competence, is aware of their skills and limits, and can accept feedback.
• Values patients and works in a patient-centered manner.
• Can prepare to receive patients in the perioperative environment.
• Can address vulnerable patient groups and individuals from diverse cultures individually.
• Interacts with patients and team members professionally, respectfully, and can establish and maintain professional patient relationships.
• Functions as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Maintains continuity of care both verbally and in writing.
• Uses the nursing process in documentation and applies it in nursing, evaluating the timeliness, consistency, and quality of the recorded information.
• Utilizes healthcare information technology, electronic databases, and reporting tools.
• Promotes patient safety and prevents adverse events throughout the patient's care process.
• Functions as an anesthesia nurse in the perioperative environment.
• Works cost-effectively, considering environmental and sustainable principles.

• Can monitor patients during anesthesia and immediately after anesthesia by collecting information on the patient's physiological state, analyzing the collected information, drawing conclusions for patient care, and acting as required.

• Can safely administer medication and fluids to patients as directed.
• Can reliably search for and use essential scientific and evidence-based information, learning materials, and unit treatment recommendations in patient care.

Failing:
The student
• Does not follow nursing laws, ethical guidelines, or principles, acts irresponsibly as a team member, fails to follow practice instructions, or engages in dishonest behavior (e.g., missing goals or shifts, not following work hours, failing to report absences as agreed upon, or not meeting the required number of hours for the course).
• Does not take responsibility for their own learning.
• Cannot assess and develop their own competence or accept feedback.
• Does not recognize their own skills or limits.
• Does not value patients or work in a patient-centered manner.
• Is unable to prepare for receiving patients in the perioperative environment.
• Cannot address vulnerable patient groups or patients from different cultures individually.
• Lacks professional or therapeutic interaction skills with patients of different ages or backgrounds and cannot provide psychosocial support.
• Cannot work as part of a multidisciplinary team and does not understand the significance of roles and responsibilities.
• Cannot maintain continuity of care verbally or in writing.
• Cannot evaluate the timeliness, consistency, or quality of recorded information.
• Cannot use healthcare information technology, electronic databases, or reporting tools.
• Does not promote patient safety or prevent adverse events throughout the patient's care process.
• Cannot work as an anesthesia nurse in the perioperative environment.
• Cannot work cost-effectively, consider the environment, or follow sustainable principles.
• Cannot prioritize tasks based on the work situation.
• Does not want to guide or share information with other students or colleagues.
• Does not perform high-quality nursing or take responsibility for patient satisfaction within their actions.

• Repeatedly makes errors in administering medication and fluids to patients despite guidance or has not completed the medication administration passport.
• Cannot reliably search for or use essential scientific and evidence-based information, learning materials, or unit treatment recommendations in patient care.
• Cannot assess the consequences of their decision-making in patient care and team operations.
