Objectives

The student
- masters the essential skills in diverse areas of advanced medical-surgical and palliative nursing care
- is able to work in advanced clinical nursing care safely and based on ethical principles
- is able to show expertise in a variety of action environments for advanced clinical nursing care
- is able to utilise factors influencing the quality of nursing in the development of his/her own work and in the work community

Content

Supervised practical training 6 weeks in environments of advanced clinical nursing

Prerequisites

At the beginning of the elective vocational studies, the student must have completed 135 credits. These should include the theoretical studies and orientation to practical training of the area which the student has chosen for the elective studies, as well as courses in anatomy and physiology. Required courses are Medical Nursing and Surgical Nursing

Participation in the courses Advanced Clinical Nursing and Orientation to Practical Training

Assessment criteria, pass/fail

Pass
The student
- masters the special features of advanced clinical nursing and understands the related knowledge base based on evidence
- is able to identify and define the key illnesses in the advanced clinical nursing environment and the associated disorders of the vital functions;
- masters in general the advanced clinical nursing process, taking into account the individuality of the patient, the continuity of care and the patient’s family
- is able to provide pharmacotherapy and fluid therapy, and is able to perform medical calculations
- Identifies the most common changes in a patient’s condition in an advanced clinical nursing environment
- manages various helping and monitoring methods, but is not always able to explain the choices in his/her actions
-- knows the meaning of falling ill in the life of the patient and his/her family and is able to support them in general in self-care when a health-related crisis occurs
- takes responsibility in his/her own learning
- is able to act according to ethical principles in advanced clinical nursing
- is able to apply his/her interaction skills as required by the situation in advanced clinical nursing
- understands the importance of guidance and encouragement in nursing care and is able to apply different methods of guidance as required by the situation

Fail
The student
- has shortcomings and misunderstanding in theoretical basic knowledge of advanced clinical nursing
- has not mastered evidence-based knowledge in advanced clinical nursing
- has not mastered key knowledge concerning care continuity in advanced clinical nursing
- has not mastered the pharmacotherapy and fluid therapy in advanced clinical nursing
and does not perform medication calculations
- is unable to perform the various tasks of advanced clinical nursing under suprevision in a controlled manner
- neglects repeatedly the preparation for situations and tasks
- is unable to provide comprehensive assessment and care planning for the patient being treated in advanced clinical nursing care
- is unable to support the survival of the patient and his/her family in advanced clinical nursing
- is unable to guide the patient and his family in self-care and rehabilitation
- does not take responsibility for his/her own learning
- is unable to receive the given feedback constructively
- has clear shortcomings in complying with ethical principles required in advanced clinical nursing
- is not able to work properly in a group when processing a patient’s care plan in advanced clinical nursing environment
