Objectives
The aim of the course is to enhance competence in postpartum midwifery care for mothers and newborns. The study module provides the skills for conducting comprehensive midwifery care for postpartum families.
The student
After completing the course, the student:
• knows the theoretical knowledge of postpartum midwifery care
• knows the normal postpartum physiology, care and guidance
• knows how to monitor, treat and guide postoperative care after a cesarean section and instrumental delivery
• is able to detect postpartum abnormalities and know their management
• knows how to observe the health of a healthy newborn, provide basic care, and guide parents in these matters
• is able to identify newborn health issues and complications and knows their management
• is able to support early interaction, guide parents in baby care skills, and promote family well-being
• knows how to works in a baby friendly manner
• knows how to promote the sexual and reproductive health of families during the postpartum period
Content
• postpartum midwifery
• normal physiology of the postpartum period
• the monitoring and care after a cesarean section and instrumental delivery
• abnormalities and treatments during the postpartum period
• monitoring and basic care of the newborn
• health problems and complications of the newborn
• early interaction and baby-friendly approach
• sexual and reproductive health during the postpartum period
Prerequisites
The student must have completed the nursing studies except the Bachelor’s Thesis. The student cannot participate until Supervised clinical training 1-7 and all theoretical and clinical nursing studies are completed.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
Student
• recognises the basic theory of postpartum midwifery
• knows the normal postpartum physiology, care and guidance
• knows some aspects of postoperative monitoring, treatment, and guidance after a cesarean section and instrumental delivery
• knows some postpartum abnormalities and basics of the care
• knows how to observe a newborn, recognizes some abnormalities and knows their treatments
• is able to detect some health problems and complications and knows the care of the newborn
• knows the principles of early interaction and baby-friendly approaches, baby care skills, and methods for supporting family well-being, but cannot explain their choices
• is familiar with the basics of promoting and guiding postpartum sexual and reproductive health
Assessment criteria, good (3-4)
Student
• knows the theory of postpartum midwifery well
• knows the normal postpartum physiology, care and guidance
• knows how to perform postoperative monitoring, treatment, and guidance after a cesarean section and instrumental delivery
• is able to observe postpartum abnormalities and knows the care of them
• knows how to monitor a newborn, recognizes abnormalities and knows their treatments
• is able to detect health problems and complications and knows the care of the newborn
• knows the principles of early interaction and baby-friendly approaches, baby care skills, and methods for supporting family well-being
• knows how to promote sexual and reproductive health of the family during the postpartum period
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
Student
• knows the theory of postpartum midwifery broadly and deeply
• knows the details of normal postpartum physiology and can apply it to client-centered guidance
• knows how to perform postoperative monitoring, treatment, and guidance after a cesarean section and instrumental delivery and can explain their decisions
• is able to observe postpartum abnormalities and knows the patient centered care of them
• knows how to monitor a newborn, recognizes abnormalities and knows their treatments and how to guide parents
• is able to detect health problems and complications and knows the care of the newborn
• has a comprehensive understanding in the principles of early interaction and baby-friendly approaches, baby care skills, and methods for supporting family well-being
• knows how to promote sexual and reproductive health of the family during the postpartum period
